I've been going to TX/ou games since 1960; I'd have to guess sometimes in the mid/late 1970's. Not out best 'tradition'.

I often attribute the phrase to Jose Pena (my mom's cousin, by the way). He was UT's head cheerleader in the late 1960s, and would often answer the phone, "Hello, OU sucks, this is Jose."

I don't think I heard the chant OU Sucks @ the 1975 Game. I had seats on about the 45 and towards the end of the game, it got tense and quiet, and someone stood up and yelled to the OU section, "why does the wind in Texas come out of the South.....Because Oklahoma Sucks!"

There was sort of a collective gasp/quite (remember this was 75)

Don't know if that actually started it, but the next year, 1976, it seemed everybody was yelling OU Sucks.

I believe the guy with the starter's pistol at the Oklahoma land rush was the first to use that phrase.

My sister was in LHB in 1973, and she told me that it was "Give 'em hell, give 'em hell, OU sucks!"

So I know that SOME people were saying it as early as '73.

She also taught me the "Make 'em eat ****!" line, but I never liked that.

1976

It may have been uttered / yelled some prior but not to the extent it was before and during the 1976 game (it was not being yelled at the '75 game). In '76, I was in Dallas Friday night and at the game on Sat. - UT fans were yelling it often & loud on Commerce Street in Dallas that night before that epic 6-6 slugfest. It was also loudly yelled at the game.

There were also bumper stickers OU sucks before that game.... I had one. I also had a large bumper sticker that said: BEAT THE HELL OUTTA ou!

A little history for any newbies: in the week leading up to the '76 game DKR learned of the spying on his 1972 team and who carried it out. It was wall to wall in the papers and on the sports news. DKR challanged blow-u HC Barney Switzer to take a lie detector test and if he passed he would give $10K to the charity of his choice. DKR also called Switzer and the ou program what they are: "SORRY ********"

Over the years I have told many people, that 1976 TX - ou game was the hardest hitting football game I have ever seen. Every play was a train wreck - both teams wanted to win THAT game. UT RB Ivory Suber cost us a win that day by fumbling late in the 4th qtr.

At one of the middle 70's games it broke out on Commerce Street and then in the stands over and over. Anyway, I don't think it was 1976, because we won the game, and when we got back to Austin, the Daily Texas wrote a banner headline that "OU Succombs." Headline kind of stuck in my head. Obviously, not the first time it was said, because the joke abut why Texas didn't fall into the Gulf had been around a long time, but as far as a chant, that's what I remember.

Some friends of mine and I have been having OU SUCKS buttons printed and giving them away since 1981 so I know the phrase started before then. We also did bumper stickers for a few years. And, as always, OU STILL SUCKS.

Sorry VYFan, we did not win in '76. It was a 6-6 tie. The clock ran out and 80 or so thousand people just stood there in silence.

It was my freshman year in the LHB. OU Sucks was in full swing then, as well as "What time is it?" "It's 3:34 and everybody knows that OU still sucks!"

Holy Crap...I just figured out it was during the last year I was cheerleader ('76) and there was the SPYGATE with Switzer....

Everytime anything (players, band, managers....) came near our end of the field was let them have it with "ou sucks, ou sucks, ou sucks..." as fast as we could say it....

THEN, later in the game we put it in TEXAS FIGHT....and I was there!!! Just couldn't remember if it was used before '76....

well, they still suck...

But I also was at the 1976 game, and you are right, that when we gave away the TD at the end to forfeit our hard-earned 6-0 win, and then OU missed the extra point to forfeit their win, everyone walked out like it was a funeral.

Texas BLOCKED their PAT and Steve Collier took the ball and ran it back to midfield and stopped. No ou player within 10 yards of him. With today's rules Texas wins 8-6.

sorry to correct, but I was standing on the sidelines with my cheerleader partner in hand and the center for ou hiked the ball to like the 30 yd line....it was not blocked...

about 10 years later, I was selling medical equipment out of Tulsa to most of Oklahoma....I was in a hospital waiting to see a doctor and the candy striper was an older lady that I struck up a conversation with...I was on my way to Dallas for the ou game and we started talking about that and she told me that her son played for ou....in 1976.....HE was the center that hiked the ball to mid-field....she said he got tons of letters supporting him....small world....

77horn...please refresh my memory....I remember ou scoring and then hiking the extra point to the 35 yd line...

Did we get the ball back? and then punted? I don't remember that part...

I don't remember all the details, but late in the 4th Texas fumbled, OU scored, and then snapped the PAT past the kicker. But that wasn't the last play of the game. (According to MBTF, they scored with 1:38 left)

OU kicked off, and I want to say Texas had it; 4th down on about its own 35/40. Clearly it would be the last play of the game. Texas lined up to punt. (I think Erxleben was player of the game).

No-one, I repeat, no-one thought we'd actually punt. I don't think OU even put anyone back to return. But punt they did. Part of why it was SO quiet at the end was that no one could believe we didn't at least TRY to win.
