Dickie V calling out Texas fans

Vitale called outtexasfans for only having 8000 show up against arky. I'm guessing most students aren't there, but it wouldn't matter since students don't get tickets to the games in Erwin. Alumni?

He's been around enough to know we have a lazy fanbase no matter the sport, especially basketball. Simply need a smaller new gym and possibly another final four to ever get the kind of support someone like him expects.

I'm for goin back to Gregory. Went to most home games when a student. Just walked up 15 minutes to game time and sat 6 to 8 rows form the court. Was great!

And, **** Dickie V

The Longhorns should take the opportunity to host home games in Houston and Dallas during the break. They can fill the professional arenas up in either city better than they can the Frank Erwin Center while the student body is out of town. The Texas alums would love it, and the support for the Longhorns would be great in either city.

Truth is, it was just not very smart for the Longhorns to schedule a home game in Austin on that date.

During the break they should have the games, all games in the Gregory. It would be loud, it would be fun and more of a crowded feel. It would surely be cheaper to have the games there too than start up the Drum for so few people.

Same for the ladies games which generally have a better atmosphere and more loyal fans. Not more, just more of a presence.

Imagine a hoops game with the kind of noise and activity of a volleyball game? That is other fan bases norm. It could be ours for a month each year.

of course it was during break but other school's games during that time did have packed houses.

I thought the 8k that were there kept it plenty loud though so all we have to do is find 8k more just like the ones who showed up to see the Horns beat arky.
You fans who were there

That was surprising to me that Rick said in postgame that it was the loudest building they'd been in all year. I have no idea if Austin will ever be a December basketball town, but who knows, maybe it can at least be a great home-court once conference play starts.

My cousin got his undergrad at Indiana University (needless to say he's a huge basketball fan) and is currently working towards his PhD at The University so I went down to visit him and we caught the UConn game together. The last 5 minutes of regulation and OT were extremely loud.

However, what stood out most to him was that a) the entire stadium erupted when they showed Manny Diaz on the big screen and b) that many people even recognized him considering he hasn't even had the job for a week. That really hit home the fact that this is a football-first school and I don't see that changing - ever.

I agree that a game or two at Gregory would be great
but allocating the tickets to the season ticket holders
would be the same (attendance-wise) and would cut down
on the others. Always a downside to an upside.

I was at the Arkansas game. Vitale pointing to overall attendance numbers does not reflect the fact that the Arkansas crowd was the lamest, quietest crowd I've ever experienced at the Erwin Center, regardless of opponent. I've been to games like Coppin State, Centenary, etc. over the years. My standards are appropriately adjusted to UT hoops fandom standards...and that Arkansas game was bad.

With that said, the fault isn't only with our fans. There are so many issues, from the venue (Gregory vs. Erwin) to the awkwardness of watching young African American men trying to get pumped up listening to AC/DC's Thunderstruck during warmups. Seems like the operations at the Drum are run by a bunch of amateurs.

Is there a college in a city the same size or larger than Austin or that has a football tradition on Texas's level that on average outdraws the 'Horns? Not surprising that places like Lexington, Chapel Hill, or Knoxville might outdraw UT for basketball; there's not much else going on there for those fans.

Because of the number of games in a basketball season, schools in larger cities like Austin are always going to be competing with other distractions for the attention of their fanbases.

They need to sell season tickets that don't include the winter break games. Then they'd make a killing by moving the games to Gregory, raising the ticket price for the 5-6 games during the break, and generating student interest.

I guess the sucky part about this is that no "big time" college would agree to play us on those terms, so we'd end up with the likes of Texas State and Wheaton College coming to visit in December instead of UConn or UNC.

Bobin Houston/
has College Day game been here this season? Not to be confused with football BTW

This refers to basketball game day that ESPN is hyping every 30 seconds and shows many venues where GameDay is going. Austin is not among them so far

Was at the drum on its first opening night as an undergrad and for the great upset of Arky when they were #1, when Ainge showed up with BYU, (no one liked him back then either) etc... plenty loud

Was back last year for the first time in yrs. (as an old alum!) and had heard the complaints of quiet. Very true. GAme was against Kansas and the few K fans were louder than us. Easy fix is just kick out all the alum from the lower section and fill it with students. Let the alum sit in the second level where we can enjoy our crown and sevens and laugh at the student hijinks below

barnes has the best job in basketball from a resources/expectations standpoint. he is expected to get the the tournament and doesnt get any heat unless they suck for a couple years. fan base pretty much sums it up.

I've been to some really great and loud games at the Erwin Center when we are playing a good team. When we had TJ Ford and Durant most of the games were full and loud because there was a sense of big things to come and excitement. Since Durant there has not been that same excitement or expectations to be a title contender. I think this year things are turning back to title contender. For football I think that our lame schedule and the dread of Greg Davis had a lot to do with some of the lame crowds this year. You will see a renewed team and crowd this upcoming year.
