I was at the farm thursday checking the deer feeders and putting in corn when I saw some dew berries nearby then it occurred to me-- it's that time of year
My mom's birthday is April 28 and you can almost set your sundial by berries being ripe the week of her birthday
I picked about 2 quarts--ate about a cup while picking them ( yep unwashed)
I decided to surprise my mom with a pie-- her favorite treat
I called my mom's best friend to get her recipe
standard thawed pie crust
add a half cup of sugar ( tsp of OJ optional) and 2 tsp butter to a quart of berries--cook on low until berries render juice--then slow/low boil for 5 to 10 minutes
let cool and thicken then add to pie crust then cover with crust-- bake in preheated 400 degree oven for 10-12 minutes until crist is golden--let cool on a rack
wow-- I amazed myself on this one--you can't mess up this simple recipe-- the tartness/freshness is impossible to beat
Just like as a kid-- kick the bush - look to see if snake heard you--then pick--some things never change
ah the simple pleasures-- I saw a huge patch of very ripe berries a block before the horse track in houston on Fairbanks the next day-- peopel would think you were nuts if they saw you picking berries out there
