Derek Jeter - most overrated player

I hate the Yankees, but .316 lifetime and 4 rings is pretty good.

He's certainly overrated defensively, but he's already a lock for the Hall of Fame. I guess people who say he's the best player in baseball would be overrating him, but does anyone say that?

By the way, do you know Jeter has an outside chance to break Pete Rose's all time hit record? Hard to believe, but true. In his 12 full seasons, Jeter has averaged 195 hits per year. If he does that in '08, that would give him 2,551 hits at age 34, 1,705 short of 4,256. If he could average 189 hits per year for the next 9 years, or 171 for the next 10, he'd have the record.

Obviously that's still extremely unlikely, but Rose played till he was 45...

Drew,

not denying that he's been a very good player on some great teams but they act like the yankees wouldn't have won squat if it wasn't for him. once again, the guy is going to have a fantastic career but wouldn't be held in such high regard if he didn't play for yankee.

Yeah, his four rings has dick to do with the argument. One player doesn't win championships in baseball (or most any sport, for that matter).

Derek Jeter is incredibly overrated and what the Yankees should have done when Alex Rodríguez came over was put A-Rod at shortstop and move Jeter to second. For the last five years they've had their best defensive shortstop playing third base. Well, I guess he might not be better than Jeter anymore now that he hasn't played there in 5 years. But he would be better if he had. But the Yankees were too concerned with appearances and Jeter's feelings.

But that's the key with the word overrated. It doesn't mean you're not great. Derek Jeter is a great overall shortstop primarily because of his offensive abilities.

Yeah, Mike Lupica said that after watching Arod and Jeter play together, it was pretty clear taht Jeter was the better player. Based on what? I think Arod is a tool, but he kills Jeter.

i hate the yankees with a passion. that said, i think derek is a bad ***. that guy plays hard. i've thought that ever since i watched just fly into the stands with no concern for himself to make an out. he did it twice in one game. i respect the dude. and he uses visa.

Derek Jeter has stones. A-Rod is a pretty-boy vagina.

The term overrated is relative. If someone said Derek Jeter is the best player to wear a Yankee uniform, then yeah, that's overdoing it. To say he is not among the best and most iconic players to wear that uniform is pretty dumb. He has made a WHOLE lot of it happen, particularly in the clutch.

he's a very good player and very good leader. that said, the two most overrated plays in the history of the sport are jeter's flip to home against the A's and jeters running catch than dive into the stands. the former, to me, was nothing special and i'd expect many players in that situation to do the same thing. the later was just a nice running catch where his momentum took him into the stands. gutsy to go full out, but i've seen other players do the same or more (brad freil comes to mind) and not get near the accolades. i thought jeter might get the congressional medal of honor for that one.

I would think that just about any player on here would be considered overrated by some. Hell even Tiger and Federer are considered overrated by many over on the tennis boards.

I do agree with 2nd post in that overrated is a general term and nobody is calling Jeter the greatest shortstop of his era or MVP of the league. He also appears to be in the downswing of his career batting well below his career BA.

He has had a good month or so, but I think JD Drew is the most overpaid player in baseball. His numbers are never better than an average OF and at $15 million a year that is way too much for what you get.

Ok, Mike Hampton is the most overpaid. JD Drew is second.

Hook em

I am not a Yankee fan at all, but I find it hard to "hate" Jeter. The only thing overrated about him is when people say he is the best player on the Yankees or the best SS in the league. AROD is definitely the better player and Jeter is not the top SS in the league. That being said, he is a great baseball player and worthy of most of the praise he gets.

He does get a pass more than Arod though. Everyone always talks about AROD's postseason numbers, but over the past couple of years Jeter's have been really bad as well.

There is a difference between overrated and overpaid. Gil Meche, Barry Zito, Mike Hampton, Mark Prior, Kerry Wood, Carlos Delgado, Ted Lilly, Richie Sexson...the jury is still out on el caballo. Every time I'm ready to throw him under the bus he surprises me or starts carrying our team. Jeter is overpaid at his position, but he is a great ************* shortstop; there aren't too many of those around the league.

Considering his career started off with a bang with that 20 strikeout performance against the Astros...yeah, he's pretty ******* overrated. He was supposed to be the next great power pitcher and due to constant injuries has never really amounted to anything. If he continues this dominant closer role for a couple of years then maybe he can be considered a great player again.

If you were starting a team and your first choice was between A-Rod or Jeter, who would you choose. I choose Jeter every time because he is a complete player and a proven clubhouse and field leader. That is what I would want to start my team with.

Jeter has had some very good years recently, but he hasn't had a monster season since 1999. His career has basically been Barry Larkin in a huge media market. He's also at the age where he's starting to decline. His SB numbers took an ugly turn last year and his power looks to be going away this year.

He has been a great player, but right now he couldn't carry Hanley Ramirez's jock if you spotted him a motorized wheelbarrow.
