Depth chart

What's the over-under on "and" in tomorrow's depth chart release?

I'll guess six, and take the over.

[edit: I forgot the term is "or", not "and".]

Initial Comments:
1. Malcolm Williams not even listed on depth chart at WR? Maybe, that's because the depth chart only lists 11 offensive positions, plus place kicker. So, with the FBs listed, they couldn't show the 3 WR set. But, it seems wierd that he doesn't get listed at all.
2. Sergio starting at SLB. Can't say I'm surprised, but it's great seeing his name there - with Muck on the other side. Personally, I'd hoped that Norton would have gotten a nod at MLB. But, I take the 'OR' as meaning he'll see equal time with Bobino.
3. I fear that nothing but "ORs" in the secondary means we'll just have to see how they play during the first few games. Not surprising, but scary.
4. Also, scary to see our only 2 proven receivers are handling the kick return duties. I'm sure their seniority means the possibility of less mistakes, but the risk of injury ....
5. Greg Smith already pushed up to #2 TE.

Saw a bunch of "OR"s but no "AND"s.

Only place I saw Malcol Williams on the depth chart was returning kicks. Of course, only two WR positions were listed (instead of the three that the horns normally employ).

Cody Johnson was first string "OR"ed at both TB and FB.

Greg Smith was first team "OR"ed at TE, passing up Ullman already. He is also the deep snapper (good way t make a living in the NFL, I'm told).

Dan Buckner and DJ Grant both made the depth chart at WR (good news!).

Aaron Lewis was first string "OR"ed at both tackle and power DE. Looks like Henry Melton will be starting power DE (what a transition, from TB to power DE!).

Still lots of "OR"s at safety and left CB. I thought Beasley had left CB locked up.

Blake Gideon is a stud and will be a great safety.

He is one of the fastest players on the whole team and I would bet he is definitely the fastest "white boy" (not that that makes a ****).

And I will go out on a limb and predict he gets at least one pick Saturday and maybe two and if he does watch out.....that guy can run with a football and make people miss.

Is Fozzy now 4th on the depth chart at RB, or am I missing something?

Vondrell McGee OR Chris Ogbonnaya OR Cody Johnson
| Fozzy Whittaker | Jeremy Hills

It turns out that there is a double secret depth chart (not actually displayed on the mack brown site) where Malcolm Williams is listed as a starter. I guess the TB roster might be displayed in a different way, too (I can not say for sure since it is double secret and not displayed on the Mack Brown site).

I did not see that Fozzy had dropped. It lists McGee as the starter then has Ogbonnaya/Whittaker listed ahead of Johnson/Hills.

I am am pumped to see D.J. Grant on the 3-deep. He had seemingly gotten the least praise coming out of camp but from what I saw (which was more than just the 2 open days) he looked better than Buckner or Williams.

Hmmm, 2 WR set with TE and FB. Let me see, that doesn't sound like the base formation the coaches have been talking about. Either they will be running the ball quite a bit the 1st game or this is just the starters for that particular formation. If they are running then I would say Smith is a better blocker than Irby...I mean he also plays OT.

Snow at LG seems odd to me when all I heard about was backup OC and Burnette possibly moving over but I guess they felt Burnette would be better at OC than OG and it would be hard to get Snow up to speed at the OC position.

How about E. Acho backing up Muck.

In addition to all the comments regarding frosh safeties and no real depth chart there just yet I have to wonder what happened to Ishie and who will likely play the nickel package?

If UT plays Nickel and 3 WR set then this depth chart isn't really indicative of that.

Ishie is hurt again/still. He just had surgery on that shoulder. I am curious about the nickel and dime packages on defense. Am I the only one who the the Acho brothers are going to be remembered around the Forty Acres for a long time?

Yeah, as stated in several "non-freak-out" posts, he's the first option at the slot receiver, which isn't mentioned on the depth chart. There's no chance that Buckner and Grant are ahead of Williams at the slot, although they are ahead of him at SE and FL.

We could be like Tech and list 5 different WR positions in the depth chart, and go 5 deep on each, but then it looks like we're starting 15 guys on offense to the uneducated reader.

And even beyond the chart, it's rare that we start the same skill player combos every game. We might open up in 3-wide or 2-TE sets in different weeks, so the depth chart obviously doesn't account for the "starter" term.

Who cares as long as we win?

Interesting note about Williams about half way down. He will be the third receiver, but evidently not classed as a split end.

Yeh Davis said on the video clip I'm watching that he is classified as a SE or Flanker depending on what you want to call it but not the slot. Perhaps if a 2 WR set then Quan and Jordan. If a 3 WR set you move one of those guys inside and play MW on the outside? Guess we'll have to wait and see.

I will say this: between Malcolm Williams, Dan Buckner, Brandon Collins, Desean Hales, D.J. Grant, James Kirkendoll, Montre Webber, Philip Payne and D.J. Monroe, if we can't find a guy to go out there and make plays consistenly, (other than Quan and Jordan) then something is seriously wrong. There is just waaaay too much talent at receiver for us not to be able to go with 3-receiver sets whenever we want.

I agree Truck. It is very exciting the amount of talent we have at WR. The coaching job in that situation is to get the right guys out there at the right time. But, hey, that's why they get the big bucks, and they've been more right than wrong.

Hook'em!!!

I think offensive coaches are going to wait & see which of our young WRs make the big plays vs. FAU & UTEP before solidifying this depth chart. Quan & Bigfoot are entrenched as starters, but I expect one or two others to break out from the pack among Williams, Kirkendoll, Buckner, et al.
