Departure of Cobb

With this do we pick up another scholarship to offer this year? Not sure how this works if someone could enlighten me.

We already picked up a fullback in this class.

We still need to open up a few scholarships to fit in all of the 2010 year's class and to get under the 85 man limit. Once that is done, it is a little easier to discuss attrition to fit in the 2011 class.

For the 2011 class, there are some other posts on here that describe how many kids will be graduating this year (I think it is 17). Then if more kids leave beyond the few required to fit in the 2010 class, we will be able to sign 17 plus the number of additional kids that leave, up to a total of 25 kids.

Some schools will sign more than 25 kids, but for this to happen some kids will have to either:
1. get admitted early so that can be assigned to the 2010 class.
2. greyshirt so that they aren't on the team and don't get a scholarship until the following year.
3. delay entry into school or never arrive at the school because of injury, JUCO, or some other reason. Remember though with injury that medical redshirts only are granted after a player's eligibility is up. Therefore, if an injury occurs in high school the player will still be on scholarship if he makes it to campus unless the player goes on medical hardship and is done with football for good.

With Payne's decision to graduate/get out of school early and Cobb's injury situation, this fits closer into 2010 numbers quite nicely!

Last time I did a count about a month ago (before Payne and Cobb), I came up with 21 scholarships for the 2010 class. So now there are 23 scholarships available for the 2010 class which turned out to be larger than I expected at 25. Have heard no mention that anyone is going to go the Juco or greyshirt route.

Last 2 spots will probably open up closer to Spring ball. Irby and one other injured TE I believe are the most likely departures.

After Spring ball, some kids see the writing on the wall (depth chart) and choose to go play somewhere else.
