Thanks for posting EHS. As the article states, Dennis Cook is a great baseball player and a greater person. The TV shot of tears streaming down his cheeks after we had been eliminated by Miami in the '85 CWS Championship Game is something I will never forget.
His father passed away while he was our volunteer assistant and he has faced other family issues. God Bless and Good Luck Dennis.
He's awesome. I remember going to a San Antonio Missions game where he was pitching during a rehab stint. He batted for himself and hit a triple. I don't think I've ever seen a guy hustle so hard to get to third base. He just flew head first into third base. It didn't matter that this wasn't the World Series. It was just a rehab game. Dude was all hustle.
I will never forget the time during a rare televised game and Dennis was at the plate and had already seen a couple of pitches when he suddenly called time out and went over to the on deck circle. But is was not for pine tar........no. He put the bat between his legs and reached into his back pocket for a dip. Just a pinch between his cheek and gum and he was back at the plate. I can't remember what happened after that but I will just say he hit a gapper for double.
True story.
Really sorry to hear about his dad.
He was great and always hung out with us wild bunchers under the tree.
actually I think this was the famous At Bat during '84 regional-ending game, he hit the SF that "scored" Billy Bates to beat Lamar . Bates was clearly out but what the hell. They would have had to beat us again to go to Omaha.
