Dell Preferred Financing Nightmare...

So sometime this last week (Tuesday, I believe), I tried to order a shiny new dell xps m1530 laptop for work/home use. Because my employer has a laptop purchase plan that pays off a good amount over a period of 2 years, I decided to use the dell preferred account's 12 months no interest financing with the laptop, and pay it off over the one year instead of paying it all up front (which is not even an option for me right now).
The initial order went through fine and all was set to go, but there was a mistake with my name and email address. I called in to get it corrected, and apparently, they had to cancel the original order and place a new order with the correct information. Everything seemed to be going fine until the sales person on the phone told me I would need to call dell financial services account verification, and verify my account.

When I called them, the person on the line told me that their systems were down

, and that they'd have to mail me a letter for verification. This would obviously not work, because dell's sales department would cancel my order in 2 days if not verified. When I asked to speak with her supervisor, I was put in some sort of phone loop, and sent back to the main dell call thing, without ever being transferred to a supervisor. It was already kinda late, and I had a certification exam to study for, so I decided to call them the next day.

I called sales again to see if they could do anything, but they said I'd have to speak with verification again, so I called them again. The person I talked to said that they could not proceed with verification by phone (their systems were in fact, not down), and that my only option was to wait for the letter. I had an exam to take that day (Thursday), so I decided not to bother myself with dell any more that day. I passed my exam, and then went to a friends house later in the evening to watch Lost (what a mind ****!).

So now it's Friday, and I call dell financial services account verification, and this time I am told that my account can not be verified!
I ask, "So what about the verification letter that was supposed to be sent to me?" Apparently, they have given up completely with trying to verify my account, and have 'permanently declined me from using dell financing' When asked if that means I will never ever be able to use dell financing again for as long as I live, their response was "quite possibly." As usual, there are no supervisors to speak with.

So what triggered all of this? Apparently, it was changing the initial order so it had the correct name and email address.

My credit is pretty damn good, and I wasn't 'declined' because if it. They just cancelled the request for financing because they couldn't verify my identity. I even offered to drive up the road to their offices (dell financial services are somewhere up on I-35) and show them three forms of ID (I knew this wasn't going to work, but I made sure they knew I was pissed that they could not verify my account, and that I could do nothing more about it.)

So now I have no way to pay for this laptop (Credit cards are out of the question, as the interest rates would eat me alive), so I had my order cancelled and sent a lengthy email to their sales department and financing department.

This wouldn't be such a problem, except our laptop purchase plan changed recently, and I'd lose out on about $700 from my employer if I have to go somewhere else to configure a laptop and get it approved.

I certainly hope this experience is not normal, and I also hope that it does not affect my credit rating at all (all I've seen on my report so far is an inquiry by dell's financial services.)

With all that being said, is there anywhere I can find a PC laptop (I'd get a MacBook Pro, but my employer won't pay for Apple hardware...) that's pretty powerful, good for development, with a nice screen (15", minimun 1440 x 900 resolution), and quite possibly a blu-ray drive? (It's for home use too...) Most importantly, I'll need at least 12 months no interest financing. New Egg seems to be my best bet so far, as the laptops in most retail outlets aren't that great...

Also, what do you recommend that I do with dell financing? They probably think they stopped identity theft/fraud, but all they were successful in stopping was the sale of a $2500 laptop. I don't feel comfortable leaving it 'open ended' like this, but all of my calls to them get me nowhere.

Any suggestions for my next step with them are greatly appreciated. I'm still talking with someone from sales who is trying to figure out what happened, but I have about as much confidence in this guy as I do in expecting okies not to cheat.

ou sucks.

It appears you have not gotten a helpful response so I will give it a shot. I have not had this situation with Dell, but had a similar situation with Mitsubishi when I bought my first big screen TV a few years ago. I had purchased it at Fry's and it went on sale the next week so I went back to see if I could get the new price. I had financed it (it cost about $4000 and they had no interest for 36 months or something) so I had to go through Mitsu financing. They had to cancel the first order and start a whole new order. When I tried to get verified for the second order, the cancellation came up and I could not get approved for a second order. I went around and around with them and could not get them to fix the problem so I wound up just purchasing the thing outright.

During my discussions when I was trying to get re-re-financed, it became abundantly apparent that this was a problem with their system. I am not sure if it is a protection issue on their end or their system is just that archaic. Attempting to explain the situation over the phone got me absolutely no where and I just had to accept that this was a problem that a typical agent could not fix. It was abundantly clear that it had to be corrected by someone that knew the system very well.

I don't have a whole lot of answers for you and hope you don't see this post as a complete waste (other than to tell you that I feel your pain and have been there before). I always felt that if I could talk to the financing people in person I could explain it better. My suggestion would be to try to find out how you can talk to someone in person and see if they can help. Whether it be someone in their corporate offices or what have you. You have the benefit of having the company in your own backyard, so I would take advantage if you have the time and inclination. Good luck.

fyi, dell royally bends you over when you are late with a payment. my best friend works there and he willing admits that it's pretty disgusting what they do with interest rates when you default on a payment.

if you have good credit why not open up a new card with 6/12 mos. 0 interest?

I believe the rate (if I didn't pay it off in 12 months, or missed a payment, or anything like) was around 21%.

I don't usually keep up with credit cards that offer financing like that. Are there any recommendations?

The reason I'm looking for financing for a laptop is because the laptops I'm looking at are at least $2000, they're for work and home use, and my employer will pay me for a good portion of it (although not as much anymore), but over 2 years. Because I've just started recently working, I don't have very much money on hand, but I need a laptop.

Basically, I need a way to split up payment over at least 12 months, and preferably with no interest.

You asked the question genius. You asked why would you worry about a high interest rate if you have great credit.

Did I say or even imply that he, you or I should go through Dell financial services for anything?

Maybe you were hinting the original poster was a *******, because I hope you weren't talking to me. I'd take it easy on the personal attacks though.

SMD, don't know what to tell you. Can you get all this worked out with Dell? I see the 12 month thing as being a great thing, if you pay it off then. Be sure to pay it off by then or, you'll know what can happen.

Shoot me a PM and let me see if I can help you.

next2, I thought you were calling me a *******. I was just stating a fact, so no worries.

As for the original poster, I really don't know. There could be more to the story.

So here's the deal, I just started working. I need a laptop for work, and instead of waiting for my employer to provide something, I decided to get something that I can also use for home stuff. My company will pay a portion of that, but they won't give me the money up front, they give it to me over a period of 2 years. It's basically free money for a laptop, they just don't pay a lump sum up front. Why not take advantage of it?

When I say 'financing', I mean 'no interest for 12 months' financing. This works great for anybody who doesn't want to, or can't pay the full amount (around $2500) up front, but knows they can easily pay it over a longer period. And since there is no interest for 12 months (assuming all payments are made on time), then I am paying nothing more than the price of the laptop.

I exaggerated on the credit card interest rates eating me alive, but why would I put something on a credit card and pay any amount of interest when I can finance it with someone else and get no interest?

Either way, I will be financing a laptop (with no interest financing) regardless of which laptop I get. I just can't afford to pay $2500 out of pocket right now and wait for my employer to pay me for it over 2 years.

The original point of my post, though, was that dell has cancelled my request because they couldn't verify the account, and the only reason that the whole verification thing came up was because an idiot sales person couldn't get an order right. And as of Friday, my employers laptop purchase plan has been scaled back $700, so any new laptop I configure would only be approved for the lower amount of reimbursement, leaving me out $700 that I could have had if dell hadn't ****** up so badly.

Perhaps my first post wasn't very clear. If there's any more confusion over this, either PM me or just ignore it and move on. Thanks.

What I am interested in now, is if anyone has any advice for non-manufacturer/retail offers for no interest financing (like credit cards.) I haven't really looked into these options, as I feel I have enough credit cards, but if it'll let me get what I want without having to pay any extra fees or interest, I don't see why I shouldn't consider them.

I helped my girlfriend move all her credit card balances to 0% interest credit cards (for 12 months) about 6 or 7 months ago. I just googled "0% interest rate credit cards" and there were 3 or 4 options. I think DIscover had one and AmEx may have had one. When we called to move one of her balances to a new card, her existing credit card company offered her 0%. The deals are out there, you just have to find them. Good luck!

SMD,
Go to UFCU or one of the other credit unions. They offer great deals on loans. If you are employed with good credit, they will gladly offer you a 2.5k loan at a reasonable interest rate.

Thanks for all the helpful replies, guys. I'm currently weighing my options here, and I hope to be able to do something about it soon.

titan, apologies. haven't been at dhs in a while. I think when I was there 17 or 19 was the best you can get. 14 is alot better.

Kinda sucks for all parties that you guys can't communicate with the salesman directly.

titan, didn't read all of the original post, but if he spoke to a sales rep the second time, I know what's going through his mind. Not sure it had to be cancelled in the first place.

Well, Titan, thanks for all you've done. I got a call yesterday, and the woman seemed genuinely interested in helping me, and although she hasn't called back yet, I have faith.

Ironically, it was some stupid directory service that has had the phone number for my name and address wrong for one whole year...

It's just very frustrating when you have no idea what's wrong in the first place.

Thanks again!
