Delivering Pizza: Can you make money?

I never did it, but my brother did it as an extra job for a while and made an extra $600-$800 a month working 10 to 20 hours a week. A lot of it was tips that the Taxman never sees.

Depends on where you deliver and when. Best money is on Friday and Saturday nights.

I don't know how pizza delivery works now, but back in the day I made some much needed extra money. Besides tips, you got extra for each pizza delivered. The secret was to get into the rhythm of the night. If you were successful, everytime you walked in the door, there was another pizza waiting to be delivered. If you were out of rhythm, you ended up waiting around the store. Some guys were really good at this and made quite a bit (some never did).

I delivered for Pizza Hut not too long ago and I averaged about $13/hour on a so-so night ($16-17/hour on the weekend nights). Don't forget that only the minimum wage pay you're getting gets taxed. Location of the store matters alot...hopefully yours is in a good neighborhood with good tippers like mine was. That, along with your general efficiency as a driver will determine what kind of cash you bring home. Just smiling when you hand over the pizza will earn you an extra $5-15 every night easily.

Pros: doesn't really feel like "working"...fun job, making more money than you probably deserve, laid back
Cons: wear and tear on your car, gas prices, working weekend nights to make the good money.

Its probably not worth the trouble while gas prices are high (unless you drive an economy car). Pizza Hut pays min. wage + .75 per delivery +tips. Those numbers don't change as gas prices change. You can easily drive 90+ city miles on a friday and saturday night.

I did it while in school and took home about $250 per weekend in tips alone. Of course this was about 5 years ago when gas prices were much lower.

Thanks for taking part in my economic plight.

Multiple jobs pay the mortgage.

I would tip you some dough.

Helter Skeleter- the good new is that if you do take the job at Pizza Hut that is one more job created for the economy!

I forget who it was a couple of years back but somebody who was in a startup was delivering Pizzas to make ends meet. I can't remember the company but they ended up getting some investors during the dot com boom.

Anyhow the guy got a name on a pizza that he recognized, about the time he got to the delivery he realized that he had been trying to get an appointment with this guy. He delivered the pizza introducing himself and the guy took his call and set the appointment the following week.

One other thing you might look at is Cable sales, as I think the hours are fliexible and the commission structure supposedly is pretty decent. If you are going to burn week hours anyhow this might be a feasible alternative. Try Grande if in your area, or Time Warner.

I did it about 20 years ago; liked it a lot cause I like driving. But looking back, it's hard to tell how much of a budget helper it was. Most of what I got was in cash, and that went right back out as soon as I got it--what can I say, I was a college student.

Another thing; if pizza places are only paying 75 cents a delivery, that's piss poor. I was getting that much 20 years ago! Maybe I read something wrong, but I sure hope they're paying more than that now.

Bottom line--if you like driving, and your car can take the wear, and you want some spending money, go for it.

If the porn industry has taught me anything, you should be getting lots of blow jobs as tips while delivering pizzas. So that's a plus.
