Delays at game start

Listening to Herman's comments, sounds like one of the issues has been that defenses have been late getting onto the field, and the official has not reset the play clock. Not clear whether they do that at their discretion or there is a hard rule about it, but it does make me wonder about other teams. I've seen it some, but haven't watched enough to say whether it's a trend. But it does speak to the continued cluelessness with which the Big XII officials seem to go about their business.

A BS excuse. Just send your offense out earlier. If you don't want to show anything have them stand around until the officials mark the ball ready to play.

Goes along with our "good sportsmanship" by allowing the defense to get set before we snap the ball. How many times this year has our offense not snapped the ball because the opposing defense was looking at the sideline waiting for a signal? Being the nice guys we are, the offense waits.

I don't think it's that. He mentioned needing to have a play that we're going to run regardless, so I think Sam doesn't want to call a "bad play" so he waits to see what the defense is lining up in. Just run the play and go. Shouldn't have taken this long to figure that out but maybe this will do it.

I dont know if there is a stat for this or not. If so, I would love to see them. From my memory alone, it seems like we have more delays coming out of time outs than I can ever remember. We even get them to start the new half which seems impossible, except that its not.

Troubling Joe, and Herman's explanation is even more troubling as he says they are waiting to see the other team's alignment. Run a QB sneak then and pick up a couple of yards - better than losing 5.

It wouldn't be troubling if the officials were re-setting the clock when the defense isn't ready to go, which is what's supposed to happen. I think he's probably stubbornly felt like the officials were going to give them the time needed, and my hope is that he's finally given up on it, and we'll just see a scripted first play.

I guess the clock gets reset in the middle of the chaos at the end of a kickoff play with players scattered all over the field, so the first play of the offense is really the second play.

Herman was saying that as the play clock is running down, even if the offense is ready to go, there are times the defense is entitled to more time to set up after the offense sets, so the time just runs out while the offense can’t play yet.

Then they need a go-to play to avoid a penalty like QB sneak.

Herman said exactly that in the Monday presser, I think it was. He said they need to have some plays that will work no matter the situation, essentially, to be able to avoid all the looking over to the sideline to adjust for the defense's alignment.
