Defensive improvement

Gary "Greg Robinson" Patterson? An extra year with Pete K getting guys more used to his system? Players just getting it done and deciding to stop acting like Being Texas has earned them anything the field? All of the above? Something else?

Ok those last drives weren't great, but you can't expect to just shut out a great offense - at some point they are gonna get some points. Only giving up 20 points on 11 drives despite very little support from the offense is pretty good, even more so since all 6 of the punts were on drives that netted Bama 9 yards or fewer, so they weren't even moving the ball at all for 60% of the game.

So many guys stepped up I'm not even sure who our "player of the game" would be. Secondary I was particularly impressed with as it felt like most of our pressures were due to coverage, but also outside of that one big TD run our DL mostly stopped their run game in its tracks - and then those back to back stops on 3rd and 4th and 1 late in the game, wasn't it a LB and a DB (Cook) making the hits? I'd have to go back and watch but it feels like every unit and most of the individuals gave an A to A+ level performance.

Today was outstanding, if this defense can play like this all year there is no one on the schedule they cant beat. Of course thats a big if.

If you listened to the Defensive players after the game they were embarrassed last year and committed to improve.
They were proud of their effort
and intend play even better the rest of the year

Very few missed tackles today. 2 guys got sucked in on that long run but we played strong the rest of the game. Watts makes that tackle and there's likely a different outcome. I'd say they pitched a push or better with Bama's D. Let that sink in. Garry Patterson is worth about 4 of these 5*'s A&M signed. No more of these late blitzes from 15 yards away where we were essentially playing 9 on 11. We had maybe the dumbest D scheme I'd ever seen.

Not to take anything away from Bryce Young, but he did that with Jamison out of the game.

I don't know if it's fair to blame Ryan Watts for missing on that sack... maybe going for the waste and not coming in high is the key, but sometimes great players just make great plays, and most guys end up touching a knee trying to get under a rush like that.

Bama won this game only because they had Bryce Young at QB.

Well, and the 80 something yard TD run...

Texas D was really stellar but for a few plays. Very encouraging.

I think only program insiders know exactly what the difference is, Patterson or K getting things turned around. But I keep hearing and reading about last season it was all because of the poor attitudes of a few players. So why didn't the coach bench them? And why couldn't they lite a fire under the ones who wanted to play with piss in their veins?

Stat,

Just my thoughts as someone at the game who has yet to watch replay:

1) On those "last drives", the coaches dialed up good calls, but unfortunately the our players missed the play. Good athletes will make you miss.

2) Throwing Greg Robinson into anything related to Gary Patterson is a big enough insult to Patterson to get him to move back to Tarrant County. Patterson didn't need anyone to bail his *** out - *** also Dick Tomey.

The board has been waiting for you to comment on the game. You don't have to go back to read the comments but many have said they are wanting your thoughts.
Did you give Herbstreit Horn Fan's greetings?
