"Dearborn — Dearborn denied a permit Wednesday for Quran-burning Pastor Terry Jones' planned protest outside the Islamic Center of America on Good Friday.

Jones could be arrested if he goes ahead with the protest outside the mosque without a permit, said city spokeswoman Mary Laundroche. She added that the permit had been denied for "public safety reasons."

Jones said he had not received notification that the permit had been turned down but that he was undeterred.

Jones is due in 19th District Court in Dearborn on Thursday to answer prosecutors' claims that his demonstration could cause a riot and demands he post a "peace bond" to cover police costs.

Dearborn officials said Jones can still demonstrate at one of two "free speech zones," including City Hall. Before denying the permit, city officials expressed concern about public safety, traffic and disruptions to nearby churches.

As much as I think that just like the wacko people who protest funerals of fallen military this new whacko has the same rights I understand being refused by city of Dearborn.
It is also interesting that their denial is due to public safety reasons.
He can protest at "free speech" zones but unless these zones are as close to the mosque as the funeral protestors are to the funerals then IMO this is a double standard decision.
Let him be as close as the funeral protestors.

Both are vile but they have the same rights.

I don't get it. I don't agree with this pastor protesting a mosque. I don't get that. I also don't get why he doesn't have the free speech right to do so. Is his speech bigoted? Ignorant? Is is harmful? Inflamatory? YES. Does that mean he doesn't have the right to do so.
I agree on the same principles as the Westboro Baptist folks. Although I think they are a special kind of sick that is beyond my own comprehension. The first amendment still applies, no?

This is also how I feel. Dearborn denied him to protest at the mosque but would allow him to protest at their " free zone" areas so this gives them some cover.

The reason for denying him to protest at the mosque is fear for public safety.

This "Jones is due in 19th District Court in Dearborn on Thursday to answer prosecutors' claims that his demonstration could cause a riot and demands he post a "peace bond" to cover police costs. " reveals the city's fear.

Good for the ACLU who have come out FOR the whacked out Pastor. If we revere our freedoms we must hold them open for POS like Jones and the funeral protestors

I've never been to Dearborn, but I hear it's too late for Pastor Jones to prevent a muslim takeover of that place. Muezzins call the faithful to prayer over a loud speaker in Dearborn, just like in the Middle East.

We'll have to try and hold the invasion at the Ohio border. "Save Cleveland" will be the rallying call.

This guy's 15 minutes should have been up a long time ago, regardless of whether the denial was right or not. It's amazing when a small fish gets a taste of what it's like to get attention and starts grandstanding. If he was more concerned about saving souls in his backyard, his congregation might be a little bigger.

The last time he exercised his free speech rights, several people were killed in retalation in the ME.

I don't think anyone has been killed because of the Kansas wackos.

Yes, it was his fault. He lit the match despite expressed concerns before his act by:
National Association of Evangelicals
The Southern Baptist convention
The World Evangelical Alliance
American veterans of the War in Iraq and the War in Afghanistan
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
Secretary of Defense Robert Gates
General David Petraeus - "It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community."
Sarah Palin - "insensitive and an unnecessary provocation"
John McCain and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell both argued that the actions of Jones put American troops overseas at risk.
President Obama - "I just want him to understand that this stunt that he is talking about pulling could greatly endanger our young men and women in uniform who are in Iraq, who are in Afghanistan."
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Canada Prime Minister Stephen Harper
Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel
The Vatican - the book burning would be "an outrageous and grave gesture"
NATO
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
House Minority Leader John Boehner - “Just because you have a right to do something in America does not mean it is the right thing to do."

etc, etc

Not to mention all of the national and international Islamic organizations, leaders, and nations.

On 1 April 2011, upon hearing the news, protesters in the northern Afghanistan city of Mazar-i-Sharif and elsewhere, angered at Jones' burning of a Koran, attacked the United Nations Assistance Mission, killing at least 30 people, including at least seven U.N. workers and injuring at least 150 people.

Lindsey Graham - "I wish we could find some way to hold people accountable. Free speech is a great idea, but we’re in a war."

And you want to give him a pass?

The 1st amendment most certainly is part of the Constitution as amended. It has been deemed by SCOTUS to apply to states (hence also entities entirely subject to the states and federal government such as municipalities). This is a Constitutional issue. There is no need to protect speech on which people agree. Dearborn needs to wake up and realize that it may not restrict offensive political messages based on fear of how inappropriately its own people will respond.

If Dearborn has not allowed any demonstrations outside of its free speech zones and has prosecuted all known non-permitted gatherings in the past, it has a chance of surviving the Supremes. The Court has held that such zones can not be Constitutional unless, among other factors, they are content-neutral. City Streets can be hard to defend as demonstration-inappropriate with existing case law. And let's face it, the message is the problem people have with Jones. His message is scorn for Islam, which doesn't play well many places, certainly not in Dearborn.
