Day trip to Austin

I'm taking 12 out-of-towners to Austin for a day. Need suggestions of what to see and do.

All are 20 to early 30-somethings. Any lake stuff is out because we are camping and floating the river the next two days.

Obviously, touring campus is on the list. But how should we fill out the rest of the day?

Breakfast - Juan in a Million, get the Don Juan, 2 tortillas. They can seat 12 no problem. If Juan is there, just act like you know him back and impress your friends.

That's all I've got right now. But it will get your day started right.

We may go to Juan in a million the following day because we aren't leaving Dallas until 10:00 in the morning. We were going to stop in West en route to stock up on greatness.

Lunch will be at Hut's and dinner will be Tex-Mex. (I was thinking Maude's or El Arroyo but hadn't been to either in a while...although there have been requests for Chuy's) We are having a BBQ the night before, so I'm skipping the usual suspects.

But, I need something to fill the day. It will be a Friday (May 25) and I've never really done Austin during the day. Well...at least not anything other than a college budget and classes. I figured that I would take them to Mt. Bonnell, but other than that I'm clueless. I figured that the Innerspace Caverns in Georgetown or the Capitol would be a last resort.

Any suggestions?

Bob Bullock Museum of Texas History & IMAX.

Tour the Capitol, that's free.

Factory outlet stores in New Braunfels..

Ikea store in Round Rock.

Cabela's store in Buda.

Alamo Drafthouse to see Spiderman III.

Barton Springs, except you'll be in the water and sun the next day.

Are the bats beneath the Congress Ave. Bridge active?

Where are these folks from? If they are yankees, go to Cavender's (S on Ben White @ Lamar or N @ Burnet & 183) & get them some cheesy cowboy hats. Avoid Allen's on SoCo or Shepler's due to price.

Otherwise...

Johnson Prez Liberry

Co-Op or Longhorns Ltd

Agreed on Bob Bullock

Cap Visitor's Center on SE corner of bldg

Finish off Sunday AM @ Stubbs Gospel Brunch if time permits.

Game @ the Disch if UT Baseball is throwing down on someone here vs. away.

Texas Chili Parlor (they say more is done there than under the dome when the Circus is in town, like it is now).

Historic French Legation

Scholz Bier Garten

What about that Duck Tour thing where you ride around in the amphibious (sp?) vehicle that goes into Lake Austin. I've never done it, so I don't know if it's worth the time or not. Maybe somebody else can chime in.

Don't let the Chuy's haters scare you away. Granted, there are better Tex Mex joints in town but the food is decent. It's kinda like the Salt Lick - you go for the experience.

yes, they do. i can hear them going by my window ("on your left you see... blah, blah, blah"...) about 2/3 times a day. i never understood the intrique to this, unless people just want to get out on the water.

I'm pretty sure the duck is in and out of the water within about 10 minutes. Most of the tour is on land I think and then they basically just want to show off that they can drive in the water.

Yeah, what Johnny said; it's basically for the 'wow' factor more than anything else. Not that I've taken it, but I guess if someone wants to do a full on touristy thing (i.e. something the locals don't really do) then maybe that's a suggestion.
