A have a couple female friends with Bdays coming up, so I was looking to get some insight into day spas around Austin.

Doesn't have to actually be in the city, but within reasonable driving distance.

Thanx in advance for any help.

this is the one i go to..its awesome, my boyfriend's aunt owns the salon, she gives awesome manicures/pedicures/facials

if that is $300 per person, this is what I recommend:

Lake Austin Spa Resort The Link :

Full-Day of Rejuvenation $360*
Two 50-minute Spa Treatments
One 80-minute Spa Treatment
Healthy Gourmet Lunch
Spa Gift
Gratuities

-or-

Half-Day of Rejuvenation $235*
Two 50-Minute Spa Treatments
Healthy Gourmet Lunch
Spa Gift
Gratuities

The first option is a little pricier than your per person budget, but well worth it. My wife did the full-day while I did the half day with an extra 50 minute massage added to it. The lunch was outstanding.

If that's $300 total, nevermind. Get them something from Daya Day Spa, Bella Salon, or Aziz

If that's your budget, then don't even think about going anywhere but Lake Austin. They'll be thrilled - it's not just the best place in town, it's one of the best anywhere.

Well, hornbanger, you sure are a nice friend. I must respecfully disagree with the Lake Austin Spa fans. I've never had a great experience there, just okay. I'd say it was a fluke, but I've given them four chances! I think for the money you have to spend, it's not worth it. I liked Mecca downtown and I heard that Vick May on W. 6th is really great. Daya has a nice atmosphere, but you get a lot of exterior noise in the treatment rooms.

Just my $.02. In any case, I'm sure they will LOVE whatever you decide on!

sucks you didn't have an enjoyable experience.

Lake Austin Spa is widely recognized as one of the top destination spa resorts in the country by many travel/spa/leisure publications. I think it's a safe bet if you send your co-workers there.

I've only been to Lake Austin Spa once, but it was a fabulous experience. I think what really helped was I went in the middle of the week and there weren't alot of people there. In between my spa treatments, I napped in the big hammocks hanging from the big trees down by the river bank. I got the full body Swedish massage and the hand and foot treatments....dreamy. The lunch was also amazing and everyone who helped or served me there was so nice and made me feel special. I highly recommend it.

Oh yeah, Barton Creek--that's a good one.

I'm glad y'all had a good time at Lake Austin. I've been during the week and on the weekend, either way still just mediocre. I know they rank very high nationally (they also spend millions of $$$ advertising in Conde Nast, Spa Finder, etc.). It's been almost two years so maybe I should try them again. I heard they were buiding a new spa facility. Anyone been there recently who can confirm this?

A colleague of mine used to work there and that's what she told me. Guess you can't believe everything ya hear, right?

I get the impression that Lake Austin is purported to be in the same league as Canyon Ranch or Auberge in Napa. They ain't even sniffin' those places. Even an urban spa like Bliss in NYC is better. IMHO, of course.

One of things that we stress is making sure you arrive on time. In other words, if your appointment is for 4 o'clock, don't arrive at 4 o'clock. Try to arrive about a half hour before. Most spas will have a policy about arriving 30 minutes or 20 minutes prior to your appointment. Arriving late usually means that you are going to cheat yourself out of treatment time.

If there is any apprehension, for example, you are male and feel uncomfortable being massaged by a male therapist, make it known when you register. A lot of spas because of discrimination laws don't want to ask that question. They want to try to employ their male therapists as much as they employ their female therapists. If you are a first time visitor, just ask for a female therapist. In general, men tend to feel more comfortable with a female touch than a male touch.

One of the most lingering questions for somebody who is new to the spa environment is whether they need to be naked for a massage. I would say that the best option for massage is to be completely naked. You are always covered under a sheet, so exposure is at a minimum and certainly your private parts are completely covered at all times. If you will feel totally uncomfortable naked, don't let it deter you from receiving a treatment. You can always keep your underwear on, and the therapist will work around that.
