Where is the day labor site in Austin? Also, what are the standards, if they exist, when hiring a day laborer? Do you have to guarantee a specific number of hours? Does laying down sod qualify for just minimum wage, or do people typically pay higher?
we used to pick them up on the southbound access road of 35, right around airport (swing around and backtrack the accesss road). The bigger, stronger ones usually convince you to take them and their partners for a discount rate. My advice is to pick like one vato and one white guy. Or one guy that speaks spanish and one that doesn't. Always negotiate the pay per hour up front or else you might end up with a mexican who refuses to leave your living room until you pay him an extra $2 per hour
Yeah, I was thinking about hiring an amigo for a day to help me lay sod. However, my friend was telling me that they can cost as much as $9-$11 per hour! I guess Mexicans don't come cheap any more. Definitely settle the rate beforehand. BTW, I thought that there was an official labor site an airport, west of I35. But I also see masses of amigos at the H.Depot on St. Johns and I35.
I hired one yesterday(in DFW) to dig some irrigation trenches. I told him up front that I would pay him $40 for the job and it should take around a half day. There were droves of thes guys begging for work. 3 of them ran up to my car before i was able to pull over to the corner where they all were.
This guy was a hard worker and earned his pay. I probably could have gotten him cheaper, but I figure that was a fair price, and my back was espcially happy not to have a sore back this morning from all of the digging.
I'm also interested in this for the same purposes, laying sod.
misirlou, if you found/find some reliable workers I'd like to know where you found them. If you have names that would be even better. You can PM me if you want.
There's a place called "First Workers" that's one of the official (legal) spots in austin. I would guess those guys want more $... You ought to be able to get someone for 50 bucks a day pretty easily.
There's a place on N. Lamar- I can't remember exactly the cross street, but it's south of Justin on the east side of the road. I used to live over there and I passed it everyday- it seemed to get a lot of traffic.
