Day 1 Practice Report (long)

I'll start out with some general observations. Eddie Jones, Sergio Kindle, and Curtis Brown were all there (but did not participate). Jones did go through warmups, and if he had any effects from the surgery, I did not notice it as he was waiving his arms in the air when the music was playing in warmups. Kindle had a very slight limp when he walked. Brown had a noticable limp when we walked. Finally, Muschamp has tons of energy. He is going to pay huge dividends.

Ok. I made point to focus on the QB's, WR's, and CB's. Here are my observations:

QB's

Top performers

1. Colt McCoy
2A. John Chiles
2B. Sherrod Harris
4. GJ Kinne

Colt was Colt. He is the best QB on campus, hands down. I anticipated Harris coming in and locking up the backup spot. That did not happen. Harris started out practice throwing the ball a little bit better than Chiles. However, as practice progressed, Chiles threw the ball better. They were both a little inconsistent throwing the ball throughout the practice, and the difference between the two passing the ball is extremely small. However, judging simply on what I saw today, I would say Chiles has the smallest of leads on Harris. Finally, I was really suprised with Kinne. His arm strength was clearly the weakest of the QB's. He was by far the least accurate. Moreover, his misses were all over the place. Some were short. Some were long. Some were left or right. I thought Kinne would at least challenge for the 3rd QB spot, if not the 2nd. However, the feeling I get after today is that he is pretty far behind the other 3 QB's.

WR's

Top performers

1. Jordan Shipley
2. Malcolm Williams
3. Quan Cosby

I almost put Williams at the top spot. I didn't because Shipley made more big plays in 11-on-11 drills. However, the only reason Shipley made more big plays is because the ball was thrown to him more. Shipley will be very good for us this year. He has great hands and runs great routes. Williams has the size, speed, and athleticism to be a real game changer. He was awesome tonight. Quan was solid. He didn't quite create the separation that Shipley and Williams did, but he was good. When a DB is stride for stride with Cosby, he doesn't really have the height to go and get a jump ball. That being said, I still think he will have a good year for us. Collins had a good practice. Good speed. I expect him to play this year. Kirkendoll and Payne didn't really stand out one way or the other today. Buckner looked really when it was just him and the QB. However, when a DB was on him, or on 7-on-7 drills and 11-on-11 drills he looked like a true freshman. However, he has good hands and you can really see the potential. He may make an impact this season. Just depends how much he progresses over the spring and summer.

CB's

Top performers

1. Chykie Brown
2. Deon Beasley
3. Ryan Palmer

I thought Chykie Brown was the best CB out there today, and it was not close. I don't know what got into him, but looked liked a man possessed. Muschamp was giving him several compliments out there. He basically shut down Quan any time he was on him. He was a beast in man coverage. He had several PBU's and dropped what would have been a sure-fire INT. I thought Beasley had a pretty good day, but he was just overshadowed by Chykie. Beasley had an INT and a PBU, but also got burned on a play. Palmer is decent, but you can see he doesn't have the athleticism as Chykie or Beasley.

Overall, lots of positives out there.

Nice work Horns83! Now if somebody can give us a little breakdown on defense and running backs.

Chykie Brown is one of Akina's pet projects from what I've heard and observed. He will play a lot in 08 and will bring a new meaning to "boom mutha*****".

I expect big things from Malcolm Williams. He's physically gifted and there's no reason he can't compete for the "Limas Sweed" spot.

Was Montre Webber out there?

DB's, LB's, WR's!!!!!! More, More More!!!!

Great post, enjoyed reading that. Can't wait to see what Thomas, Wells, and Scott can add in the secondary. Thought 2 of the 3 would play last year and what was really missing but now I am really glad they redshirted.

I think it is a given that Colt remains the #1 guy. Hope they use the backups more this year though as they have both progressed and their passing games should be much improved to allow the additional playing time.

Not many of the "impact" freshman have made it in for the spring...will be fun to watch in summer how Brewster, Grant, Hales, Monroe, Williams fit in.

I think Brewster will RS, same with Grant and Hales. Williams and Monroe may RS also. We are stacked at CB with both Browns, Beasley and Palmer. At safety, we have Ishie, Wells, Scott and Thomas. Williams may play, but I think the rest will RS. Hales may get some time at WR, but were deep there also, just young.

I wasn't able to make it out to practice this morning (went to 6th street last night). However, from what I heard, many of the same people that stood out during the first practice (Chykie Brown, Deon Beasley, Malcolm Williams, Jordan Shipley) also had some good showings today. Haven't heard anything on the QB's from today's practice.

Kinne is one of those recruits I never understood and when I think Texas took two quarterbacks in that class and now will only take one this year with the talent in the state I can only be more perplexed.

Anybody else excited that we are actually practicing the nickel package? Finally!!!!

Too many times last year we let teams convert on 3rd and long and didn't force many INT's either. With the pass rush we get from our DL and the depth that we should have in the secondary this year the nickel package could be utilized quite a bit...and help get more of the young DB's on the field.

I had Harris ahead of Chiles but Harris seemed to not get anymore reps when Chiles began to throw the ball better. He didn't get too many looks. Thas just how I saw it. Saturday, I saw no contest. Harris hands down. Even with him throwing to Walkon receivers. Kinne had a pretty good day, and Chiles seems to throw the ball straight into the air.

Do you think Beasley or Brown have the physical attributes to go with the athleticism to cover Crabtree?
I know that is more than a tall order to cover the best WR in the country, but what I mean is that they both sound like lockdown corners, but do either of them have the strength/size to cover a big bad *** like that, not shut him down but keep him from making catches above their heads?
