Sounds to me like we are going to run more then we did last year. Last season we started to run more but after 10 games we stopped running as much because we were not playing good defense, hope it last all season long.
Did you notice that Barnes when talking about the front line stated that he only had 80 minutes for six guys. Looks to me like we are going to run 3 guards again this year but I hope we go big 40-50% of the game. The depth in the frontcourt could be huge for us with the players that we have.
Balbay is fearless and sounds like Varez will be in the rotation .Balbay could avg. 4-7 assists a game if he holds to form. Did Conner add any lbs. to his frame ?
This season should have its up and downs with the schedule that we have but the more I look at individual players the more I feel that we will do very well in conference and at the Dance.
I would take that 80 minutes comment to mean that Damion James is playing the 3, which will of course be his NBA position and I think probably his natural position here.
That leaves 6 guys being Atchley, Pittman, Hill, Wagmene, Chapman and ... I'm either wrong or blanking on another big.
At this point I think Wangmene's status is up in the air. He has other priorities more important than basketball. It might be best for all concerned if he took a year off to do whatever he needs regarding his family and overcoming such a devastating loss.
On the other hand, maybe it's best if he jumps right back into basketball. Whatever is best for him.
It's tough for me to see much in the way of a 3 guard lineup if Damion James isn't playing much in the post --- 'cause the dude is going to be on the floor a ton.
The key is his ability to guard perimeter players.
I'm a little sad to see the exhibition games apparently go the way of the dodo. To me it's another example of Barnes being more interested in preparing his team for success in the season than marketing. I can certainly understand that, but it makes me less sympathetic to any churlish comments from him regarding fan support. As long as he stays positive, and talks about how good the fans are doing that do come to the games, I'm fine. But any comments regarding games that don't have as much attendance as he feels like they should (and I'd probably agree with him)...well, some of that is on him. In terms of making a tradeoff between marketing the team or better preparing them for a successful season, he consistently chooses the latter course.
That was true when he first came on campus and cancelled post game appearances in the Burnt Orange Room. It was true when he cancelled Midnight Madness. It was true when he chose not to make himself as accessible as he had at Clemson during football weekends. It's true when he doesn't make nearly as many public appearances to various civic groups around town to marshall support for the program the way Penders did.
I'm just glad he does the radio show. He's such a personable guy, and he's so great with people. It just seems like a shame to me that those strengths aren't better utilized in terms of creating support for the program, but such is life.
Anyway, I am in support of 2 scrimmages instead of exhibition games, but I sure enjoyed attending the exhibition games every year. The first come first served seating arrangement was great, and the free admission meant people who might not ordinarily be able to bring their family were able to do so. And two years ago during Durant's year, they even held an autograph session for the players after the first exhibition game, which I thought was neat.
Exhibition games = worthless....esp. when they started charging the public for admission.
I'd rather the team go against a quality opponent in a private setting where the coaches can get something done instead of a 50 point blowout in front of 2500 fans.
Yeah, skymonkeyhorn, look at what Barnes says in that paragraph about the 80 minutes. He lists 6 players to sub in to those two positions, and he doesn't mention James at all. He's also talking earlier about being a big team and an excellent rebounding team. He's saying Texas will play big this year.
Of course, he started the 06-07 season with a bigger lineup, but that didn't last long, and a lot of us have been hoping to see it now for two years, but I do think this is the year that the depth and experience in the bigs will warrant playing bigger lineups.
