4-stars by rivals, scouts, and ESPN 300. A bit below that in 247sports. In the 250-375 range nationally. Great pickup. It came down to FSU and us, but FSU had a numbers problem and didn't push hard in the end.

It was a great thing that Charlie did, to offer a whole bunch of Florida DB guys (7 of them?) when he found that it was a bit late for many of the Texas DBs below the state top-20. He then focused only on Boyd, Hill and Sheffield at the top and went for FL guys for depth. We needed players. We should stillbe getting one or both from among Boyd and Hill. Boyd is a little less of a lock now than last week, but Hill just firmed up more (named Texas, Alabama and LSU but LSU may be out now). The rest of the defensive backfield will come from Florida. Tim Irvin is the next one expected to commit, in a couple of days.

Though the talent is similar, the Florida guys have a bit of an edge to them on defense. That's because they hate being scored on, unlike the Texas defensive players who are a lot more used to it in HS and so take a bit longer to develop that edge. I think Charlie can get these guys to play with that edge a bit sooner than the Texas guys below the state top-20. That is what I think is Charlie's thinking.

Holes in the team keep on getting plugged. Nice!!!

Charlie’s doing work, filling some holes as Jay says. I think he's putting together a solid foundation.

Yes, Dion, it has been one hell of a recruiting job by Charlie this year, against all kinds of negativity around. He paid so much attention to the roster imbalance and started marking off check boxes on holes perfectly .

To support what I said above that he wasn't going to sit idle when he found it tough to be sure he will have enough good Texas players to fill the urgent need, here is what he did in mid-October, surprising all the Texas recruiting analysts who never had any inkling that Charlie was ever talking to all these guys - Texas Longhorns bombard Florida with offers to seven defensive backs

We should get 2 from it, and will probably slow-play a third one (Sheldrick Redwine) a little bit as we wait on Hill and Boyd. Perfectly orchestrated!!

Bringing the "Florida five" together on a visit during a great weekend (LB Cecil Cherry, DB Davante Davis, DB Tim Irvin, TE Devonaire Clarington, WR Gilbert Johnson) was just a master-stroke. The 5 guys throwing up hookems at DKR is probably the most retweeted picture this recruiting season, people say! We have got 2 in. A minimum 4 of them will commit. Maybe all 5.

If only all the negative folks who are pissed at the final two losses and only look at Watsons' problems and Swoopes, would pay some attention to the details Charlie is handling.... Oh well. I can't say for sure if Charlie will have enough wins in 3 years to keep his job, but I can guarantee that he will leave the next coach with a completely well-balanced and problem-free team of players to work with.

Solid foundation, as you said.

It will be awesome to see this defense in 2 years now that they are bringing in guys with better size. We have had way too many guys spinning up positions the last 5-7 years.

Well after our beat down against Arky our recruiting started to bleed. We lost our momentum in the recruiting process after having a great positive movement with players like Jefferson. Then we had players like Burt questioning where he was at going from a strong lean to now a soft lean if that. So getting a player to step up and states Texas is his team shows there is still confidence with players knowing this team is going in the right direction and wants to be a part of it. So I believe this stops that bleeding at least and can't hurt the players that were getting doubts about the direction of our direction. These kids are influenced by their peers.

This kind of artwork is not by the players, but they buy into it and tweet and retweet. Then I Photoshop!!

Next to circle could be Irvin.

Jay, maybe it was Boyd. I read some comments after our loss from a recruit and was thinking it was Burt, Now that you pointed it out I do believe the comments I read was from Boyd. The problem is these kids can't see the big picture. So these losses like we had against Arky hurts our cause no matter if we want to admit it or not. But that is the type of players that want to jump on the easy train for results and that's what they see. Players like Jeffereson is not picture where he will be at the end of next year but where the "team" will be in his laters years on the 40. Those are the players that will make the difference anyway.

Excellent point on ST there, I35. The the kind of details that is always missed by superficial observers who just keep thinking that Charlie is an idiot who doesn't even know the basic ST schemes that all HS coaches teach. The way it affects the mental focus of the players is important too. It is at that important possession-change time period when the players need to be thinking/discussing the next possession that some starters end up going out to play ST. Of course, experienced and talented starters should be sent in at the right times on ST (Mack used to do a great job of it, when he had player depth), but they shouldn't be constantly getting called in for ST duty.

Lack of depth (not just in numbers but also in number of players who "want to do it") is a killer in Special teams play.

[PS: On the bowl-loss effect on recruiting, I was worried too, like you. It had potential to do serious damage, but I was reporting on what actually happened, which seems to be that the recruits aren't bothered. I guess they pretty much knew it wouldn't be much better. I think our recruiters have been pointing out our problems very well to these recruits and asking them for help, which may be why they are all solid. The loss may even have been proof for what the coaches were telling them!]

As of now, our class rankings are #9 on scouts, #11 on ESPN, #11 on 247sports, and #13 on rivals. We moved up some 6 or 7 spots from a month or two ago.
