Darkness on the Edge of Town

Just picked up the special edition with the DVD features. How cool is this thing - I have a feeling I'm gonna be spending a lot of time with it this week.

I sometimes forget how good this album really was. The title cut is just flat out a fantastic song, in some ways I think better than Born to Run. Can't wait to get through all the extra songs - I always loved The Promise and the other stuff I've heard so far has been good too.

That reminds me of "The Promise" documentary I watched a while back about the making of this album. I was particularly amazed at Springsteen's obsession with perfection; often going over the most minute details countless times until it felt right and the patience of the other band members in trying to accommodate him.

It's funny ... I love Springsteen but "Darkness" is the one LP that I simply can't listen to. "Candy's Room" seems trite and obvious, "Badlands" doesn't begin to approach songs like "Thunder Road" in terms of the power or starkness of its imagery etc...
