Dark Side of the Moon

rip's thread on "a night at the opera" inspired me to start this one cuz i also recently watched VH1's classic album episode on "dark side."

there's not alot that can be said about that album that hasn't already been said... but there was an excellent part of the show where someone talked about floyd's use of "blank space" in their music.

and i think that's a small part of what makes that album so pleasant and timeless.

it's so nice to hear music or a gtr solo with long, tasteful sustaining notes... and just empty space every now & then.

Many moons ago after having passed out from heavy partying with this cassette looping at an elevated volume in my apartment, I woke up disoriented in the middle of the night to the sound effects at the end of "Speak to me". I thought the ******* aliens were landing.

I absolutely love Floyd's use of space in their music...
Think the 2nd half of the song "Echoes."
Also some good use of it on, "Animals."

I think Alan Parsons had a lot to do with Dark Side of the Moon's greatness.

Every now and again the planetarium at Central Texas College will show a laser show to Dark Side. It's pretty cool.

They have other laser shows to Pink Floyd music, as well as music from other artists. But Dark Side is my favorite.

i was JUST about to bring up "great gig in the sky."

it was alan parson's idea to bring in clare tory to improvise over that track. (i don't know if it was his idea to get a woman to sing, but it was his idea to get HER.)

and richard wright said she did it in practically one take. they told her to think about death & sadness, etc... and just sing your heart out.

they said she came into the control room after singing it and was embarrassed and apologetic, while they were in awe and absolutely loved what she did.

all my life, i pictured that woman looking like aretha franklin or one of those women that sang "it's raining men"... but she's a lil' ol' white girl.

Check out Dub Side of the Moon - Easy All stars. Badass remake of this album. They also remade OK Computer, although not nearly as good.

try the full length Echoes (song, not album) with the end of 2001 beginning with "Jupiter... And Beyond"

In honor of Sir Arthur C. Clarke

If anyone ever gets the chance please go and see -
The AussieFloyd.

They are fantastic. One of the girl singers nails that freaking song....

they are all full of ****. Hit play on DSOTM right as the fans start stomping we will rock you in AKT and you will be blown away.

Y'all don't know what the hell you're talking about...it syncs up to the pilot episode of Knight Rider, not Knight's Tale.

DSOTM celebrates its 35th birthday next Monday (based on the UK release date of 3/24/73), so no time like the present to enjoy a classic.

i was always a fan of "Any Colour You Like" as the unsung (pun intended) track of the album.

good point about the use of empty spaces. Sigur Ros does the same thing. they know when to play, and when to let the listener take an auditory breather.

I love Floyd and bought covered, reserved tickets to see Roger Waters performing DSOTM in May at Cynthia Woods Mitchell.

Funny thing is, so far I can't find anyone who will go with me.

My brother-in-law: "If it were really Pink Floyd..."

I say, "Wait, this is the guy who wrote it!"

No dice.

(Sometimes I think I live in Bizzaro World.)

David Gilmour puts an a damn good show as well. I saw him in the early 80s on his first solo tour. That may have been one of the best bands I have ever seen live.

I saw Gilmour with Richard Wright in Oakland a couple of years ago at the Paramount Theatre. It was hands down the best concert I've ever seen. Hearing Gilmour play "Echoes" was un-*******-believable.

Ditto Aussie Floyd. Their entire first set is DSOTM and they absolutely nail it, lights/lasers/visuals and all. To me it was better than seeing Gilmour or Waters because each of them brings his own "bias" to the material and their live vocals(esp. Gilmour's) suck. These dudes lay it down, and the range and amount of material they perform is simply amazing, not to mention the production. Highly recommended.
