My dad is a high school football official. He refereed the game last night and provided a few comments on Mr. White.
First Bob Stoops was on the field when dad came out of the locker room. He was obviously in attendance to see White. I assume he spoke to White and his coaches. He stayed through at least mid-way 2nd quarter before probably leaving to catch the 2nd half of another game. He said Stoops was polite but smaller in person than he thought.
Other than White supposedly there's a linebacker and offensive lineman for Dunbar that will also get scholarships somewhere. Said the lineman was 6-7. He called him for holding once and admonished the kid. Said he was at least 4 inches bigger and had 50+ pounds on the DE and that he was good enough to have no reason to hold him. Kid was kinda sheepish, but didn't hold the rest of the game. He didn't think either were good enough for Texas or OU but should receive offers from the Baylors, Tulsas and the like.
Now, White is about 6-2 but skinny. He told me that he reminded him a lot physically of BJ Johnson. But he ran the field like Vince Young. He didn't appear to be running hard at all but because of his stride he ran past everyone. There was no doubt he was the best player on the field. White played WR, kick returner, punt returner and held the ball on extra points/field goals.
He caught one kickoff and ran across the field till he could find a hole. When he saw it he hit it hard and flew past the kick team, scoring a touchdown. He also had another touchdown where he caught a fly pattern and left the db like he was standing still. The other officials in the locker room at halftime all agreed that as fast as he was it looked like he had yet another gear that he didn't need nor use that night.
Dunbar has an approximate 50/50 run/pass ratio. When they ran the ball White knew his assignments and was willing to block. Dad remembered one block where he came back and clocked the safety. He basically blindsided the kid. It wasn't illegal nor dirty, he didn't come from behind, but the other player never saw it and he took advantage. He never shied from contact and wasn't afraid to get his nose dirty.
Dad has been refereeing for 20+ years and isn't afraid to label a kid as cocky or a loudmouth, but he said White was very polite. He talked to him a couple of times before kickoffs. Very yes sir, no sir. Told him he's a Texas alum and hoped he went there but wished him well wherever. Flat out asked if he'd made his mind up and he said no. Didn't list any favorites either.
Overall it's easy to see why he's very, very highly thought of. A shy quiet kid didn't talk trash to the other team, did his job, didn't ***** about the number of balls thrown to him or the fact that they ran the ball as much as they did. Dunbar coach speaks very highly of him and he's coached several D-1 kids. Needs to add weight but if he works at it, and there's no reason to think he won't will, be a star at the next level.
