Dan Patrick always on stage with Cruz

Even on nights when he loses in every contested primary, Cruz gives a victory speech with Dan Patrick behind and to the right of him.
This can't be an accident, but why? Cruz has a really attractive spouse. Dan isn't much to look at and is conspicuously taller than the presidential contender.

That's a good question. It's possible that Patrick is steering a lot money in Cruz's direction, and/or perhaps he wants to be a part of Cruz's administration. I'm not sure what kind of role he'd have. I don't see any other reason, because if anything, being near Patrick is a liability in the general election. He's be much better off with his good looking but not trashy looking wife nearby.
