got a son in middle school band, the Dallas Brass performs these concerts, does a little song with the school band;
saw them tonight. coming from a former euphonium player, the brass players were pretty good, not great imo. But, the drummer stole the show, wow! He did one of those funky things during his 10 minute drum solo, that really makes you just shake your head.
with one leg, he kept the steady beat on the bass drum, and with his hands he started off really slow and gradually sped up, hard to describe just how hard this is, imo.
He was also the comic in the group, he was drinking while playing his solo, etc.
if you get a chance, go see it just for the drummer.
Their leader explained at one point how they used to go without a drummer, I can't imagine how boring it would have been without him.
other funny thing; the PA system was so bad, get this:
D. Brass played a broadway song, they had a guest soloist, a local girl. Her mike didn't work, but she sang on just like it didn't matter.
I was sitting middle of the auditorium, I could hear her without the mike, although I had to listen very closely.
halfway through the song, a guy comes up on the stage, from the side, tentatively approaches her, she nods, they trade mikes, we can hear much better, but she sounded better without the mike, imo!
