'D.J. AM' aka Nicole Richey's ex dead

Dude, I'm 45. Yeah, in some respects I'm "old".

I wear my pants at my waist, I have no tattoos or piercings and generally don't care for the looks of folks that do, and I don't give a rat's *** about DJ AM (or anyone else that has DJ or MC in their "name"), or Justin Timberlake, or any rapper, etc. I believe that as a rule, music recorded over twenty years ago is better than more recent recordings. I don't "tweet", or use facebook or myspace, and I have been known to question the sexuality of men over 25 that do. I use "!!!" to show emphasis instead of "111".

On the other hand, I do embrace some changes and developments. I believe that the Brazilian wax is the greatest invention since penicillin. I prefer Mack to Coach Royal. Although I love old cars, I believe a 2008 anything is a much better vehicle than a '66 anything. I am in favor of gay marriage. And I love the interwebs. Particularly as an information source for an out-of-area football team. And porn.

So there. Call me an old goat if you wish. I won't be offended.

I am sorry for this man's family and friends. A drug overdose doesn't only kill the user, it also kills a part of the soul of those left behind.

I don't know much about this DJ-ing, but I will say this: If DJs can produce well-mixed music that I can use in my aerobics classes, then I am all for them. My music must stay within a certain BPM and must segue seamlessly from song to song. Each song must be performed in even 32-beat phrases and the songs must not lose any beats during the segues. The music also has to be peppy and something that makes people want to move.

If DJs can make this happen, then hooray for DJs.

Thanks dude, now I am going to die. Nice job.

I am in the process of compiling random randomness to make a series of cd's for you and PoPo to listen to in the car when you are driving your four-legged creature around the lush environs of HK. I am obtaining a Gemini IkeyPlus for the task at hand.

Dude, thanks for telling me there are FREAKING KING COBRAS in Hong Kong and Lantau Island. Son of a *****. I so would not have taken some of the shortcuts I took when going to the hotel to meet our boy from NYC. I am skeeved out thinking about this.

If he was using two ibooks or laptops and two turntables he was using either Serato or a program like that. This is much easier than beat matching and mixing without them. There are pluses to a program like Serato, however.

It stores your music, thousands of tracks in the computer. you have a special "vinyl" that goes on top of the slipmat and turntable. You cue up the song you want on the computer. It tells you everything from bpm to all other info on the song you want. you can even assign hot starts or scratch starts. Takes all the work out of a pre-cue.

You can scratch the vinyl or cue it just like vinyl with virtually the same response.

Pluses are many and some consider it cheating. Traveling dj's will tell you that lugging around crates or boxes of records gets old especially with extra baggage charges, customs and luggage lost. I personally landed in Atlanta for a gig while my two boxes of records landed in Albany. Ooops.

It allows dj's to stockpile music without purchasing or learning about it. They just horde it. There is a certain amount of aural intimacy from knowing a track and discovering it. I can see both sides of this.

Serato makes it so that just about anybody can dj. I have seen some who rely on it have a problem and have to try to mix the old fashioned way and they floundered mightily. They did not know any other way.

I personally don't use Serato nor do I see myself doing so. I am both old school and ignorantly stubborn about it. I probably should and may one day do so. I don't hold it against somebody who does use it but let's not give AM props for doing anything difficult with that set up. To put him in the same echelon (if that was being done) with Carl Cox is a big time stretch. The list of dj's on that mans level is very small. He is an A-lister who flat out earned that respect. Coxy is a super nice man with amazing skills. I cannot say enough about him as a person, artist or dj.

Rest in peace, AM.

I agree. AM had talent, a following which fot big from who he dated and is far from a top tier dj. But he was fun. I saw him only 4 times and one of them was slotted overlapping his set so only caught 30 mins of his set. But he was fun and was also nice.

No, not all djs rely or use proframs all the time. Semantics and it is close. It is standard.

awesome thread - just for the record, this was a suicide by overdose...not some accident.

for those who would like to hear some excellent and accessible DJ music, try z trip

Josh Wink will pull sets without them. He will just use decks and usually a Rane Empath. I know Farina does not always use them. He sometimes even goes without a sampler. He will either have them on plates or discs.

Many jungle dj's won't. I know Clara Moto often does not but she does use Ableton, I think (or production software) and she will remix tracks live and on on the fly. That is wicked and a far cry from what Serato will do for you.

Richie can go bare bones and I have seen him do it twice in the last few years. In fact, he uses a lot of production tools as well but again, creating remixes on the fly is a big difference.

You can hit up on youtube sets recorded from people at a variety of events and festivals and you will see jocks using two decks and a mixer.

Look up the sets by Ricardo VillaLobos and Tiefschwarz at the last Love Parade held in Berlin. Main stage and you won't see Serato. You won't even see CDJ's. You will see Technics and a mixer, headphones and guys rocking the **** out of the crowd on a lovely German evening.

Maybe the guys you see use it but no, they don't always use it. Yours was a blanket statement and untrue. I happen to know some of the people I listed and know personally, many more I left off the list. I am not name dropping but more using it as a I ******* know for a fact and beyond just going to shows here and there.

I cut my teeth on the East Coast from the mid 80s to mid 90s and keep in touch with people/friends. As I said I will probably give in someday and actually use a program like Serato. After all, I gave in a couple of years ago and now use CDJ's along side 1200s (of which I think I need new ones as mine are over a decade old).

You are very informed and I can tell you like this music. You may even spin it or make it and if so I wish you the best of happiness, fun crowds and honest promoters. I adore this music and respect anybody who gets up there and plays music.

I am one who would rather hear trainwreck after trainwreck with awesome music than an Oakie type set that is rehearsed and lacking often in music selection. Some of the best dj's, imho, are the guys in their bedrooms hungry for a break and make the most of it opening up a night. Be it a dj from San Marcos, Portland or Savannah, it does not matter. Being from NYC or Paris does not make a dj good. I think you will agree with that.

Hell, half the top billed djs are not hungry any longer. They live the lifestyle and abandoned what got them there. Ugh, I am ranting.

Check out the Love Parade sets I mentioned. I think you will enjoy the vibe of them if nothing else. I hope you like Minimal.

Evidently evidence of some serious crack smoking, plus 8 Oxtcontin in his stomach, one still in his mouth partially dissolved. He died before he could even get the last one down..
Really sad, esp when I remember him saying that God must have spared him from the plane crash for something special. Somehow, I don't think this is what God had in mind. Depression is a bad, bad thing.

i've personally seen the guys from hybrid, within the last year and a half perform dj sets with nothing but two turntables and a couple crates worth of records. mind you, the records were obviously created and produced using software by hybrid, but the set itself was one hundred percent not using software.

so some still do it.

we don't know for certain but the evidence as reported is pretty clear.

given that we know fatal crack overdoses are extremely rare and that it is common knowledge that oxy will kill you gently(sleep then respiratory arrest) - it is easy to conclude that, unfortunately, this guy had enough, closed himself in his room, hit the pipe for awhile and exited with a handful of oxy.

it is sad. however, it is helpful to know what happened and I did not want people to read your OP and infer that this was an accident.
