D Gib Saved $840k Negotiating His Own Contract

I agree. Good move by him.

What these guys should do is simply hire a lawyer on a hourly rate to review the K to make sure everything looks good. They know what their market rate generally is. Ray Allen did this a few years ago; good to see Gibson is following a similar path.

Paying 3% to an agent is just dumb once you have idea what you are worth.........

He might have saved the money on his deal, but who is to say he wouldnt have gotten a bigger deal with an agent, thus making himself more?

It was a gamble, and we will never know if he would have been paid more if he had at least tried to talk to other teams and hired a new agent.

Im in the agents court and dont feel like this was the smartest move. But if he wanted to be a cav and only a cav, and he is happy with the money he got, good for him!

I love me some D-Gib

Happy for Daniel, but UTeric32 has a point. Agents make the big bucks for a reason and the bigger the contract, the more they make.

I thought an agents main function was getting their clients to dog it when they want out of a contract.

I still can't get over the fact that D-Gib has a successful NBA career, let alone one that will pay him an average of $4.25 million for each of the next five years.

If he can do that, he might as well serve as his own agent.

Leigh Steinberg might've doubled that figure.

UTEric32 is absolutely correct.

Some of the agents are lawyers and do work on an hourly basis. Lon Babby is one of them and has a bunch of high profile clients - Duncan and Bowen are just two examples.

Maybe, just maybe, he didn't want to make the front office sour on him, since he is not an un-tradeable player. I think a little common sense and honesty goes a long way in the NBA. Sure, maybe an agent gets him more, but then he slips a little and gets traded to the Knicks. He obviously values playing on a good team with a good relationship with management over more money.

I don't think the front office would "sour" on a player just because he - like virtually every other player in the league, in virtually every professional sport - has an agent looking out for his best interest. That is, unless there is already something else going on beneath the surface. This is a business and it's all about what have you done for me lately. You can bet if Gibson couldn't cut it the Cavs would cut him loose in a heartbeat.

An agent is also going to help you get all the advertising deals. I'm guessing he still has to employ an assistant or manager. No way he deals with all the pub without any kind of rep.

He got a deal in-line with others like him, so I don't think an agent would have gotten him a lot more money. Some, maybe, but not a lot more.

I think it was a case where they came up with the number they wanted, went in and got it done. If he is happy and Cleveland is happy, then everyone should be happy.

Pretty interesting that he is making as much as Thomas is already. Never thought it would happen, but I am VERY happy for DGib!
