Texas (13-0, 2-0) hosts Iowa State (10-3, 2-0) to whittle down the teams of undefeated teams in the Big 12. Currently, Texas, TCU an ISU are all 2-0. Horns will be looking to snap a three game losing streak to the Cyclones. ISU holds an overall edge of 11-17 edge in the series. Texas is ranked #4/6 in the AP and ESPN polls with a new ESPN poll due Tuesday. ISU is unranked. ISU will bring an eight game winning streak to Austin while Texas will step in with a 13 game winning streak.
The Cyclones have three players in double digits in Seanna Johnson (# 12, 5-10 Jr. G) at 18.0 ppg, Bridget Carleton (# 21, 6-1 Fr. G) with an average of 14.0 ppg and Jadda Buckley (# 11, 5-8 RS Soph. G) at 13.5 ppg. Those three account for 68% ISU’s 66.5 ppg in league play. Meredith Burkhall (# 32, 6-3 Fr. F) has the highest FG% at 71.4% although that comes on 5-7 shooting. Johnson (13-33; 39.4%), Buckley (6-16; 37.5%) and Carleton (6-19; 31.6%) are the primary shooters along with Bryanna Fernstrom (# 44, 6-5 Sr. C) who has connected on 5-11 for 45.5%. Nicole “Kidd” Blaskowsky (# 15, 5-7 Sr. G) is the 3pt shooter for ISU. 19 of her 20 shots have come from behind the arc (3-19; 15.8%). Buckley (5-10; 50.0%) is the most accurate 3pt shooter with Carleton second at 36.4% (4-11). In two games, the Cyclones have three players that have reached double digit FT attempts: Carleton (12-12; 100%), Buckley (10-10; 100%) and Johnson (10-12; 83.3%).
Johnson is one of three players averaging double doubles in the league. In addition to her team leading 18.0 ppg, she leads ISU with 10.5 rpg. Blaskowsky is second with 6.5 rpg while Carleton adds 6.0 rpg and Fernstrom 5.0 rpg. ISU has two players in the top five among assist leaders in Buckley (6.5 apg) and Johnson (4.5 apg). ISU is currently last in the league with an average of 5.5 steals per game. Carleton and Frenstrom top the team with averages of 1.5 spg. Fernstrom (6 blocks) and Johnson (4 blocks) combine for all 10 blocks that ISU has swatted in league play.
The Cyclones’ roster shows 12 players. Two, TeeTee Starks (# 22, 5-9 Fr. G) and Madison Baier (# 34, 6-4 Sr. F/C) are out for the season due to injury. In the two league games, ISU has played a seven player rotation. Lexi Albrecht (# 25, 5-10 Jr. G), Claire Ricketts (# 30, 6-3 RS Fr. F) and Jordan Jensen (# 35, 6-2 Jr. F) yet to play in a Big 12 game. They have seen limited action in OOC games. Johnson, Carleton, Buckley, Fernstrom and Blaskowsky have started both league games with Burkhall and Emily Durr (# 3,6-0 Fr. G) coming in off the bench. All seven average double figure minutes with Johnson (38.5 mpg), Carleton (36.0 mpg), Buckley (38.0 mpg) and Blaskowsky (35.0 mpg) rarely coming out.
Horns have three players with double digit scoring averages with a fourth just below that mark. Imani leads with a double double average of 19.5 ppg and 12.5 rpg. Ariel is second in scoring with a 14.5 ppg average while Empress is at an even ten pts per game. Kelsey is averaging 9.5 ppg. Horns have seven players that have taken at least 10 shots in the two league game, topped by Imani’s 27 attempts. She has made 16 for a 59.3% from the field. Kelsey leads three players that are hitting 60%+ from the field: Kelsey (9-13; 69.2%). Ariel (9-14; 64.3%) and Tasia (2-3; 66.7%). Brooke (2-9; 22.2%), Celina (2-6; 33.3%), Ariel (2-5; 40.0%) and Empress (2-5; 40.0%) lead the Horns from BTA. Empress (8-12; 66.7%) leads the team in FTs attempted. Ariel (9-10; 90.0%) has the highest FT%. Imani has gotten to the FT line nine times and connected on 7 for a 77.8%. Brooke is shooting a very uncharacteristic 1-6 (16.7%) from the FT line. She was making 83.3% of her FTs going into the WVU game. I expect she will return to being one of the top FT shooters in the league.
As noted earlier, Imani leads in rebounding with an average of 12.5 rpg, which is second in the league. Brianna is second on the team with 7.5 rpg. Celina adds 4.5 rpg. Celina averages 5.0 assists per game. Brooke chips in with 2.5 apg while Empress and LaShann each averages 2.0 apg. Brady, Brianna and Kelsey each average one assist per game. Ariel leads Brianna in steals, 5 to 4. Four others have at least one steal. As she does in the overall stats, Imani leads in blocks. In two conference games, she has ten blocks. Kelsey is second with two.
The starting lineup for Texas consists of Imani, Empress, Brianna, Brooke and Celina. Ariel, Kelsey, LaShann and Jordan have also seen action in both Big 12 games. Tasia, Sara, Brady and Olamide have gotten into one game. That’s a pretty solid nine player rotation with four others available depending on matchups or foul trouble. Brooke (29.0 mpg), Empress (28.0 mpg), Celina (27.5 mpg) and Imani (26.5 mpg) are the one logging the most minutes per game. Ariel, Kelsey and Brianna also average over 20 mpg. No one else averages more than LaShann’s 9.0 mpg.
Projected starting lineups based on the last game:
Texas____________Iowa State
Imani (6-7)________ Fernstrom (6-5)
Brianna (5-9)______ Carleton (6-1)
Empress (5-9)_____ Blaskowsky (5-7)
Celina (5-8)_______ Johnson (5-10)
Brooke (5-4)______ Buckley (5-8)
ISU has good size with the 6-5 Fernstrom and 6-1 Carleton starting and 6-3 Burkhall available off the bench. Ricketts, a RS Fr. is also available to matchup with Texas inside. But, for Texas, covering the 3pt line will be critical. ISU takes close to 50% of their shots from BTA and Horns have had trouble covering 3pt shooters in their first two league games. Fernstrom has been a solid presence inside for ISU, providing defense, rebounding and scoring inside to compliment the Cyclones’ outside shooting.
For ISU, stopping Texas’ inside game will be the first priority. ISU likes to play zone and that proved effective last season. So far this year, Texas has been able to find the soft spots in zones they have faced. Texas guards and wings have been able to make shots from midrange and from BTA well enough to help keep teams from effectively sagging inside.

ISU takes pride in their history as one of the top shooting 3pt teams in the nation. So far this season, KSU and ISU rank one and two in 3pt attempts. 46% of their FGs are from BTA. The problem for ISU is that they are only hitting 26.4% from BTA, eighth in the league. Texas’ weakness is defending the 3pt shot. Horns are ninth in the Big 12 in that category. They will need to step up that 3pt D or ISU will probably take more than their normal 46% of their shots from BTA. One area where the Horns should have an edge is rebounding. Horns go inside quite a bit more than ISU and are more effective inside than the Cyclones.
Texas will rotate at least nine players in and out of the game. ISU will depend on basically four with one guard providing relief and two posts splitting the time in the post. Texas will run at every opportunity, steals, rebounds, inbounding the ball. ISU will slow the game down although they do take quick shots if open. If the Horns can force the tempo, fatigue could kick in for ISU if they do not use more of their bench.
