Texas (13-0, 2-0) hosts Iowa State (10-3, 2-0) to whittle down the teams of undefeated teams in the Big 12. Currently, Texas, TCU an ISU are all 2-0. Horns will be looking to snap a three game losing streak to the Cyclones. ISU holds an overall edge of 11-17 edge in the series. Texas is ranked #4/6 in the AP and ESPN polls with a new ESPN poll due Tuesday. ISU is unranked. ISU will bring an eight game winning streak to Austin while Texas will step in with a 13 game winning streak.

The Cyclones have three players in double digits in Seanna Johnson (# 12, 5-10 Jr. G) at 18.0 ppg, Bridget Carleton (# 21, 6-1 Fr. G) with an average of 14.0 ppg and Jadda Buckley (# 11, 5-8 RS Soph. G) at 13.5 ppg. Those three account for 68% ISU’s 66.5 ppg in league play. Meredith Burkhall (# 32, 6-3 Fr. F) has the highest FG% at 71.4% although that comes on 5-7 shooting. Johnson (13-33; 39.4%), Buckley (6-16; 37.5%) and Carleton (6-19; 31.6%) are the primary shooters along with Bryanna Fernstrom (# 44, 6-5 Sr. C) who has connected on 5-11 for 45.5%. Nicole “Kidd” Blaskowsky (# 15, 5-7 Sr. G) is the 3pt shooter for ISU. 19 of her 20 shots have come from behind the arc (3-19; 15.8%). Buckley (5-10; 50.0%) is the most accurate 3pt shooter with Carleton second at 36.4% (4-11). In two games, the Cyclones have three players that have reached double digit FT attempts: Carleton (12-12; 100%), Buckley (10-10; 100%) and Johnson (10-12; 83.3%).

Johnson is one of three players averaging double doubles in the league. In addition to her team leading 18.0 ppg, she leads ISU with 10.5 rpg. Blaskowsky is second with 6.5 rpg while Carleton adds 6.0 rpg and Fernstrom 5.0 rpg. ISU has two players in the top five among assist leaders in Buckley (6.5 apg) and Johnson (4.5 apg). ISU is currently last in the league with an average of 5.5 steals per game. Carleton and Frenstrom top the team with averages of 1.5 spg. Fernstrom (6 blocks) and Johnson (4 blocks) combine for all 10 blocks that ISU has swatted in league play.

The Cyclones’ roster shows 12 players. Two, TeeTee Starks (# 22, 5-9 Fr. G) and Madison Baier (# 34, 6-4 Sr. F/C) are out for the season due to injury. In the two league games, ISU has played a seven player rotation. Lexi Albrecht (# 25, 5-10 Jr. G), Claire Ricketts (# 30, 6-3 RS Fr. F) and Jordan Jensen (# 35, 6-2 Jr. F) yet to play in a Big 12 game. They have seen limited action in OOC games. Johnson, Carleton, Buckley, Fernstrom and Blaskowsky have started both league games with Burkhall and Emily Durr (# 3,6-0 Fr. G) coming in off the bench. All seven average double figure minutes with Johnson (38.5 mpg), Carleton (36.0 mpg), Buckley (38.0 mpg) and Blaskowsky (35.0 mpg) rarely coming out.

Horns have three players with double digit scoring averages with a fourth just below that mark. Imani leads with a double double average of 19.5 ppg and 12.5 rpg. Ariel is second in scoring with a 14.5 ppg average while Empress is at an even ten pts per game. Kelsey is averaging 9.5 ppg. Horns have seven players that have taken at least 10 shots in the two league game, topped by Imani’s 27 attempts. She has made 16 for a 59.3% from the field. Kelsey leads three players that are hitting 60%+ from the field: Kelsey (9-13; 69.2%). Ariel (9-14; 64.3%) and Tasia (2-3; 66.7%). Brooke (2-9; 22.2%), Celina (2-6; 33.3%), Ariel (2-5; 40.0%) and Empress (2-5; 40.0%) lead the Horns from BTA. Empress (8-12; 66.7%) leads the team in FTs attempted. Ariel (9-10; 90.0%) has the highest FT%. Imani has gotten to the FT line nine times and connected on 7 for a 77.8%. Brooke is shooting a very uncharacteristic 1-6 (16.7%) from the FT line. She was making 83.3% of her FTs going into the WVU game. I expect she will return to being one of the top FT shooters in the league.

As noted earlier, Imani leads in rebounding with an average of 12.5 rpg, which is second in the league. Brianna is second on the team with 7.5 rpg. Celina adds 4.5 rpg. Celina averages 5.0 assists per game. Brooke chips in with 2.5 apg while Empress and LaShann each averages 2.0 apg. Brady, Brianna and Kelsey each average one assist per game. Ariel leads Brianna in steals, 5 to 4. Four others have at least one steal. As she does in the overall stats, Imani leads in blocks. In two conference games, she has ten blocks. Kelsey is second with two.

The starting lineup for Texas consists of Imani, Empress, Brianna, Brooke and Celina. Ariel, Kelsey, LaShann and Jordan have also seen action in both Big 12 games. Tasia, Sara, Brady and Olamide have gotten into one game. That’s a pretty solid nine player rotation with four others available depending on matchups or foul trouble. Brooke (29.0 mpg), Empress (28.0 mpg), Celina (27.5 mpg) and Imani (26.5 mpg) are the one logging the most minutes per game. Ariel, Kelsey and Brianna also average over 20 mpg. No one else averages more than LaShann’s 9.0 mpg.

Projected starting lineups based on the last game:

Texas____________Iowa State
Imani (6-7)________ Fernstrom (6-5)
Brianna (5-9)______ Carleton (6-1)
Empress (5-9)_____ Blaskowsky (5-7)
Celina (5-8)_______ Johnson (5-10)
Brooke (5-4)______ Buckley (5-8)

ISU has good size with the 6-5 Fernstrom and 6-1 Carleton starting and 6-3 Burkhall available off the bench. Ricketts, a RS Fr. is also available to matchup with Texas inside. But, for Texas, covering the 3pt line will be critical. ISU takes close to 50% of their shots from BTA and Horns have had trouble covering 3pt shooters in their first two league games. Fernstrom has been a solid presence inside for ISU, providing defense, rebounding and scoring inside to compliment the Cyclones’ outside shooting.

For ISU, stopping Texas’ inside game will be the first priority. ISU likes to play zone and that proved effective last season. So far this year, Texas has been able to find the soft spots in zones they have faced. Texas guards and wings have been able to make shots from midrange and from BTA well enough to help keep teams from effectively sagging inside.

ISU takes pride in their history as one of the top shooting 3pt teams in the nation. So far this season, KSU and ISU rank one and two in 3pt attempts. 46% of their FGs are from BTA. The problem for ISU is that they are only hitting 26.4% from BTA, eighth in the league. Texas’ weakness is defending the 3pt shot. Horns are ninth in the Big 12 in that category. They will need to step up that 3pt D or ISU will probably take more than their normal 46% of their shots from BTA. One area where the Horns should have an edge is rebounding. Horns go inside quite a bit more than ISU and are more effective inside than the Cyclones.

Texas will rotate at least nine players in and out of the game. ISU will depend on basically four with one guard providing relief and two posts splitting the time in the post. Texas will run at every opportunity, steals, rebounds, inbounding the ball. ISU will slow the game down although they do take quick shots if open. If the Horns can force the tempo, fatigue could kick in for ISU if they do not use more of their bench.

Game time will be 7 PM this Wednesday at the Frank Erwin Center. The game will be carried on the Longhorn Network and the radio broadcast will be on 104.9 FM, the Horn.

I am anxious about this game. They are used to beating us, and I'm sure they expect to come in and beat us one more time. How motivating is that, to knock off a #5 team (or whatever we currently are). Bill Fennelly is one savvy coach.

This should be a statement game for us, we should come out and crush this team. The strategy has to be to keep ISU off the lines (free throw and 3 pt). ISU is so one dimensional that we should dominate from start to finish, if we stay defensively disciplined. Talk on screens!!! Post will need to step out to help on screens!!! Guards will need to stay with their man, no help is needed!!! ISU is not driving to the basket to score but to drive and kick!!! Let's Go Horns!

I agree. ISU plays us pretty much the same, time in and time out, and we play into their game way too often. I love beating the ISU team as much as almost any other team. Agree that they are a one dimensional team, also. No reason Texas shouldn't beat them. Let's go Horns!

Considering we did NOT do well vs Texas Tech's 3 Pointers, and ISU shoots almost exclusively from the 3....I am also anxious about this game!! They will not go inside on us much IMHO, considering the Imani/Kelsey blockade, so they may really hurt us w/ the 3's....
:rolleyes1::bevo::hookem2:

Please call screens and don't try to go straight through a 6' girl when your 5'. Injury waiting to happen! We CAN do this! Both games last year were very close!!!!

We looking good offensively but our defense is lacking. Iowa getting too many good uncontested shots. The score is not a big spread. Brooke's 3's finally falling after the last few games. Prob because there are no defenders on her. Celina's shot is looking goooooood!!!! Keep it up girls! But play D!! Iowa always comes back!!!!

Empress is horrible!!! Ariel needs to move into the lineup quick!

What game were you watching? She had some blips but def made a difference. I agree with adding Ariel but I'd take Brooke out until she plays defense. She shot better than in last few games but the girl she was guarding shot so well. By far but I think Celina is a smarter PG.

Outstanding game for the team and coaches! Everyone got a chance to play and we did what we were supposed to do against ISU. The starters defended the 3 ball really well and limited their offense. Brooke was on fire tonight!!! I like how Brooke & Celina play off of each other. I think we have found a nice back court duel with those two. Imani was a beast tonight on the boards!!!! This team can go undefeated but they will have to control the number of shots Empress takes...she has to understand that she is not a big time scoring. She is a defensive player that can drive to the basket. My only concern with this team is will she try to do too much when they play Baylor. I think we are watching history in the making so more fans need to come out to the games to support.

Empress hit some shots late but I just think she takes the wrong shot way too often. I really do not dislike Empress, I just think she thinks she is better than what she really is. It's just my opinion, I have seen her have some good moments. I just think Ariel plays with more composure and doesn't take as many bad shots or miss layups.

Really happy to get the win. Lots of good things for the team to build on. I continue to see new offensive wrinkles, and the execution is gradually improving. Against ISU, if you are going to take the open 3's they give you, you need to make them; we did tonight, especially early on. That set the tone and gave us enough separation to play pretty loose the rest fo the game.

Individually, tough to see Lashann miss that breakaway layup. You could see her get down on herself. If she makes that basket, I think her confidence and body language would have been quite different immediately afterward. But, she did continue to fight, and finally got a shot to fall.

Sweet. Beat ISU at their own game. Missed some easy shots under the basket but somehow kept it together and performed great on defense. Nice to see our outside game can be just as lethal as our inside. Deep. Deep. Deep. 14-0

Empress is a baller, before you judge her, look at film of her vs Stanford (last yr AND this year), and her game winner vs A&M last year...she has saved our butt quite a few times...she is a Senior, and a good defender to boot.
This team rotates "shooter of the game" honors..they ALL belong, they ALL contribute in their own way...so you who are NEW to this board (or not) need to know what you are talking about before you post!!

Exactly. Empress has made shots no one else on the team is capable of. Usually driving to the basket, and perhaps not every game, but no question her leadership, and defensive skills are vital to our success. Also agree 100% about 'shooter of the game' - we're just 14 contests into the season and six different players have taken that honor thus far. And we've had 6 different players lead the teams in steals, and the list goes on from there. You never know who's going to step up, or exactly what their contribution is going to be from one game to the next. We've had three different players lead in rebounds, and Lang isn't one of them; three more have led in assists, and McCarty isn't among that group (though both Kelsey and Brooke are certainly among the top in those respective categories for the season). We were supposed to have difficulty shooting the three, while also having trouble with teams who count that as a strength. Yet we drop the fourth most (11) in school history vs. ISU, while the Cyclones manage just three for the entire game. So much for those two assumptions. Of course that doesn't mean we're dangerous, or even a consistent threat from BTA, but it does show that we've been able to adjust, and do what was necessary to win every game thus far. Clearly it make us very difficult to prepare for; you just never know what you're going to see from this team. I still think we're going to lose some games, and that will probably be a good thing, depending on what those losses look like. But, overall, we look mighty good so far.

Empress is a player who doesn't understand good shot selection. For herself, or in the actual games. She was 2for4 in the game from three. But that's fools gold, she is not a good three point shooter and she needs to stop taking three pointers, even if she's wide open. She needs to be taking mid range jumpers that are good shots. Not the out control bad shots that she has a tendency to take a lot. If you are not at least a 34 to 35 percent three point shooter you shouldn't be taking them at all.

When you take good shots that you're capable of making and playing under control you have a higher probability to make those. Like I said early it's all about being efficient. Ariel hasn't scored as many points as she did against WV but she's been very efficient, shooting over 50% in both games. And also playing under control and making good decisions and not turning the ball over at a very high rate. Empress should slow down and take note of that. It's all about being EFFICIENT!

Karen subs more routinely than I sh*t. If Davenport wasn't performing she wouldn't see minutes. Personally, I prefer her on the floor than off. Wasn't she the top scorer just a few games ago?

The starters basically are subbed for when they pick up fouls, are not hustling and getting beaten by who they are guarding, or are winded. That's no different than any other coach. I have no issues this season with the substitution patterns. If Ariel and Brady had started the season healthy, or would have gotten to 100% by now, the starting lineup would be different and thus, so would the subs.

As for Davenport, her biggest issue to me has always been playing out of control and getting called for charges when driving to the basket or using her forearm to push off. I think she really has improved on that this season, and that has allowed her to see more minutes. She continues to improve on her shot-selection, but that's probably something she will continue to struggle with from one quarter to another. Happy she is having success in her final season.
