Custom Builder - BOYL - Houston

anyone know any home builders in Houston that do the "Build on Your Lot" service? I'm looking for a reasonably priced one, not some builder who only does mansions.... more of a typical home of 2,100-3,000 sq ft...

I know that David Weekly offers this type of service.. but anyone know any others? have experiences to share?

I'd recommend that you talk to several architects, use one, and then get their input on a builder. I think it's well worth the fee to get a design that fits you and recommendations on a builder you can trust. Giving you a custom design may even end up saving you money if the architect can eliminate some spaces that don't really fit your lifestyle. And no, I'm not an architect, but an attorney who spends a fair amount of time suing builders.

Any contractor can do it, but find one in the neighborhood. Houston is pretty big and they tend to focus in certain areas. If you drive through the neighborhood and don't see custom builder or remodeling signs, you probably shouldn't build in that neighborhood. Of course, try and get referrals from friends, etc.

I'm working with a friend who is a realtor to get some referrals... in the meantime I want to do my homework...

as for finding any contractor.... the problem I have is that I live in the Heights area and would like to stay around here.... I'm over living in my 3-story townhome and want a more traditional house, but don't care to move out to the burbs... the problem with the builders around here is that they are all buying up lots and subdividing them to maximize profits... thus I'm finding they have little incentive to put their crews to work on a BOYL home as opposed to turning out houses on lots they are buying... make sense?

as for getting custom plans... my father in law is a home builder in the Beaumont area.. so we have cheap(free) access to architect plans and such... again.. the problem I'm running into is that the builders won't know their full costs for doing a custom job like that, and I don't want to deal with cost overruns etc...

this is gonna take some work... argh
