If anyone has been to these places I would greatly appreciate it if ya'll can give me some feedback. i'm hoping to go one of these places on thursday evening for dinner with a friend.

My preference between the two is Habana for food, Cuba Libre for drinks. I only went to Habana when it was on Congress, haven't hit the new location yet.

Someone with more experience feel free to speak up...

I have been to both, and agree with Dan. Habana is a traditional restaurant, but also has good drinks, whereas Cuba Libre is basically a bar that has some food. The grub is much better at Habana.

Apparently I need to go back and graphically represent my answer so that scottsins will give me full credit.

Habana 100%

my wife is Dominican & from Miami so I've eaten quite a bit of Caribbean cuisine. Although Habana is too expensive & misses the mark on some dishes IMO, they are still pretty darn good & the best in central Texas for what they make. The Ropa Vieja is actually very good at Habana & is actually pretty close to the authentic version I had in Miami cooked by a Cuban lady. Plus they have good drinks & make a good Mojito.

Cuba Libra is a bar with subpar & expensive food. They try to do good Caribbean tapas but fail miserably.

Spend all of your time at Habana, skip Cuba Libre & you'll be happy.

Enjoy!

I actually just went through the trouble to download a font so I could formally prove the existence of a Cuban restaurant that was the best in Austin, and that said restaurant is Habana.

Fortunately I realized posting such would be really damn nerdy.
