Cuba demands return of Guantanamo

There is no penalty on homosexuality on Cuba, in most respects they are leading the pack on gay issues.

Simple diversion from the issue at hand, gross HR violations at guantanamo and the issue of soverignty.

FCH, the argument Cuba has held on this being an illegal occupation has been the Vienna Convention of 1969 which states it isn't retroactive to treaties and agreements between states prior to its acceptance. Thus just on the face I don't see how Cuba is in the right.

If you wanted to make an argument that it is the right thing for the US to do by removing ourselves from their island, I would probably agree. However similar to the embargo I don't see it happening due to other forces at work.

I would rather not appease Castro. Wait until he and anyone associated with him is out of power in Cuba, then we'll talk.

FCH, if you want to argue the US shouldn't continue to occupy Guantanamo that is fine and you might have some of us agree with you. However your argument that legally we are in the wrong, is not the case.

Some true facts:

1) The present administration has dishonored and shamed our nation, and violated our historic principles with a state program of torture, secret prisons, and indefinite detention without charges.

2) We've only got to put up with those corrupt, incompetent, embarassing, un-American, Anti-Texan, Chicken-**** cowards for 11 more months, and I guaran-damn-tee that President ObaMacClinton will put a stop to all that, quickfast.

3) The Castros Government is grandstanding, go figure

4) Our lease is legit

5) Cuba can piss up a rope on this, as was previously mentioned

6) Habana Club Anejo is muy delicioso. Get ahold of some, drink it neat, on the rocks, or try what I call a Mambo Manhattan:
-3 parts Anejo Rum (Flor de Cana 7 Anos will work here as well if you lack the moxie to acquire Cuban Rum)
-1/2 part sweet vermouth
-1/2 part dry vermouth
-Dash Bitters
Shake with ice, serve on the rocks in an Old Fashioned glass, garnish with Lime.

Tell them to come and take it. We have Col. Nathan Jessup standing on that wall. We need him on that wall.

Shotgun, I'm pretty sure that the Cuban govt. read it before they signed it. They knew what they were doing. They don't like it, they can buy it back from us.

Or they can come and take it.

I see no violation here. There is a naval station there. The holding cells are within the base. There are no provisions against prisons inside the Naval Base. Or anything within the naval base.

Hell, one could make a case that you could put a nuclear weapon holding facility in there and claim it is for naval operations.

I think the US should give Guantanamo back to Cuba. The port was forced on Cuba in 1903 when they were under military occupation. What about all the treaties the British Empire signed with the 13 colonies that were violated in the revolution? The 1969 Vienna treaty has a clause making its pronouncements not retroactive, but come on. Why not? That's like banning slavery except for those in slavery at the moment. The Vienna treaty establishes a code of ethics in international relations that the US is violating by keeping Guantanamo, even if it is technically legal.

Besides, it keeps up the appearance of American imperialism in Latin America. The port isn't necessary any more (anyone still use coal?) and it would help out our standing with the Cuban people.
