Crystal Beach

Surf fish in the morning if the water is calm. Get ready to pay $10 to park on the beach. And try Sharky's, Ship's Wheel, and the Tiki Hut. Bob's is a good place to hang out and eat, and Coba's has a good breakfast.

stingaree and steves landing are the 2 best seafood restaurants.

go to sharkys and get ready for the best peoplewatching in the western hemisphere.

Steve's Landing is the best "nice" place to eat down there (I use that term loosely).

The Big Store (aka Gulf Coast Market) has everything you will need to cook at the house, but if you want A+ steaks, you should bring them from home. Theirs are adequate, but not exactly butcher shop quality.

Dannay's DoNuts is a must-do for take-home breakfast.

My favorite "shelling" is Shark Tooth hunting. Find a bank of broken shell along the edge of the water (there are many all along the beach), and as the water moves back-and-forth over the shells, look for fossilzed shark teeth. Most of them are tiny, but many are about the size of you pinky fingernail.

It takes a while to get the hang of it, but there are thousands of them out there. I've found about 2500 over several years. The usually black or grey distinct triangle shape is what you are looking for:

Happy Hunting!

I'm back, and all of y'all's recommendations are right on. We had a long wait for the ferry on the way over, and a couple of chubby, jailbait-looking girls popped out of the truck in front of me to smoke cigarettes. And yes, they were wearing jorts.

I didn't get to hit any bars, because we had the kids down there and my wife was too scared after the recent rape/murder down there, which took place less than a mile from our beach house. The whole town is still talking about it.

If the Big Store is the Galleria of CB, then the Bay Vue Grocery is the Fifth Ward. There were always some pirate-looking degenerates loitering around out in front of the Bay Vue, and some of the merchandise they were trying to sell in there cracked me up. Who will pay $12 for a Hideo Nomo T-shirt in 2007? (BTW, they recently bricked up the front of the Big Store -- it now looks like a castle.)

Bought three pounds of shrimp from a guy near Steve's Landing; boiled up and ate some cocktail style and others with pasta and homemade pesto from a buddy of mine who grows it in his yard in Austin. No restaurant this side of Gaido's had better food than us that night.

Found a bunch of stuff on the beach, including a dude's wallet with $34 in it. We're giving it back to him today -- turns out he lives a couple of miles away. Also found two small sharks and some kind of saltwater gar that was about three feet long.

I have found more dead sharks on the beach -- three -- than shark teeth. In over 30 years of looking, I have never found one. I guess should start ripping them out of the jaws of the dead ones.

yeah, that murder happened in the sub division directly to the east of my house.

scary stuff indeed.
