Cruise Help needed.

My parents just gave me a $1000 certificate (from them) for a cruise for me and the wife, on account of my becomming a lawyer and whatnot.

Basically, we can travel from 5/14-5/26, and from 6/13-6/27.

We want to leave out of Galveston or Houston for obvious reasons. We Don't give 2 shits about "exotic" and stuff, becasue we just want to eat, drink and **** for a few days.

Any "secrets" or tips for finding one? Orbitz and **** are a pain in the ***, and I know there are better sites.

thanks in advance.

We just got back from a Royal Caribbean cruise out of Galveston (the Rhapsody of the Seas). The other line that I know goes out of there is Carnival, but I suspect there are probably one or two other lines. As far as Royal Caribbean goes, they don't allow price competition between travel agents (real or electronic), so pretty much the price you find is the price. Not sure about Carnival or the others.

We went on a 7 day cruise, and a balcony cabin ran us $3,386. Oh, I'm sorry, did you want some booze too? That will be extra -- figure about $4-$8 / drink, wine is $25 - $75 / bottle. Shore excursions vary widely from $25 per person to $350 per person. If you throw on an extra grand, you'll probably be covered for the trip.

Cruise Critic is a great place for a ton of information.

A few points about a cruise:
1. Get a balcony. Don't go on a cruise with out one.
2. Do your own thing on the shore excursions -- the cruise line with make a ton of money by overcharging you here.
3. Don't get all excited about the food. Royal Caribbean allocates $11 per person per day for food, and it shows. For example, allow me to translate: when you see "Ribeye Steak" you should imagine a 1/2 inch thick tough piece of prime rib. When you see "Chocolate Creme Brule", you should imagine chocolate pudding. When you see "Beef Tenderloin" you should imagine a small tough cut of steak smothered in brown gravy.

We went to Key West, Grand Cayman (couldn't get off the boat because it was too rough), and Cozumel.

I'll agree with runner. I went on the Rhapsody out of Galveston last year and it was a great cruise. All three ports are badass, especially Key West and Grand Cayman.

I agree that you need a balcony and you should do your own thing in port, unless you see a really badass shore excursion that you just have to do.

Cruise food has gone way downhill lately. I went on Carnival out of Long Beach to Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo a little over a month ago and the food was pretty bad.

well, basically, due to schedule/budget constraints, I squeezed an extra 200 bucks from the folks and we're doing the Norwegian Sea, 7-night cruise to Cozy, Honduras, Belize (I know not to leave the port area) and some other place.

7-nights is good for us, since I like getting all settled in for a while on vacation. I know that Norwegian has smaller rooms, but we will NEVER be there, except for sex. Sex in small rooms like that will remind me of doing it in the 21st st coop loft beds.

Anyway, should be fun, and we will be smuggling our own booze. We'll still end up spending a lot, but my "base drunk" should be more reasonable for us.

Not very hard to smuggle in your own booze. I've done it twice on Carnival. Just realize soft drinks aren't free, so I hope you drink stuff straight or you'll be paying for mixers.

There is no need to smuggle booze on board. You can buy at duty-free prices right on the ship, and then pay a fee to take it to your room. Duty free price + fee < price of booze at local liquor store. Much less hassle.

went on a cruise last fall, and had seen on HF a post regarding some of the lines, and Holland America was described as a floating nursing home. Low and behold, the wife picks Holland America. No kidding, at least 25% of the people were disabled, either walkers or wheelchairs or some just too fat to walk normally. Was hoping for some fine scenery..... babes, biklinis, etc. No way......

And to top it off, we got hung up in hurricanes, and it stayed out 4 extra days. Missed the N. Texas game, had football withdrawals.

The balcony room was big and nice. Wife got naked on the balcony often.

We were on a cruise ship during spring break, and so I was hoping for some talent on board. There was absolutely none. I'd put the average weight of females on board at about a duece, duece and a quarter, but admittedly, there were a few that really threw off the average.
