Crowd vs. KU

I ain't going to ***** about some people not showing up. I understand that some games people are more fired up about than others.

I wish there was a way for people who are not going to the games to get their tickets in the hand of some organization that can get kids or maybe even older folks who can't afford to get out much a chance to see a game.

But for those that were there, wow. That was the lamest DKR crowd that I have ever seen in thirty plus years of seeing two or three home games a season. There had to be around 2oK empty seats at the start of the game and those that were there never really got into it at all. We must have set the record for polite applause.

And I don't hold it against people who do not stay the whole game either. In my case I took my five year old nephew to his first game and he was ready to go home at halftime. I did manage to get him to stay until the start of the fourth quarter by moving over to the home side so he could see Bevo and have some cotton candy. That sugar rush bought me the extra fifteen minutes.

It's everywhere Y Sanchez unless your team is undefeated and in contention for the BCSCG. Too much TV. All the great games are on the tube.

The days of going to a game to enjoy the game are over for the bandwagon fans that fill the remaining seats. This is why I think a playoff will only make it worse.

You see it more so in the pro game then the NCAA but if your team is a non contender you will have lots of empty seats.

And the new trend is regardless of the score, leave in the 3rd quarter a la LSU. That great venue is now so lame in the 4th qtr because it is 1/3 empty. Fat cats and corporate types are like the frats. Game is secondary or worse.

There were plenty of tickets on the street that I'm sure you could get for less than face

When my daughter was in elementary school we were at a game at which it rained. She had a poncho on but still cried and wanted to go home. Dad doesn’t leave before "Eyes".

I'm happy to announce that she still likes to go with Dad to see the Horns.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Austin Area is an option - they get our extra tickets for football and baseball. They just need some lead time to line up someone to use them.

The first time you get a thank you hand-crafted by someone who might not otherwise ever see a game in person, you'll know it was the right decision.

PM if you need contact info.

I was hoping to get a chance to see Case "run the offense". I think this would have charged up the crowd some.

Get used to it. When your home schedule features the likes of KU, KSU, Baylor, Rice, ISU, TTech, there isn't a lot to get excited about. Our only good game is played in Dallas. The rest are boring, even if the team in question is actually sorta good (see e.g. KSU, TTech, etc). We can no longer look forward to aTm or Nebraska firing up the home crowd, and TCU and WVU won't move the passion needle at all after the first time they play here.

We are now in a very humdrum conference playing against a lot of boring schools from sparsely populated rural areas devoid of passion or national reputation in their own right. Hence, a lot of empty seats.

Look on the bright side -- maybe in a few years we will be able to get season tickets in the lower deck for less than $10,000 per year. In the meantime, I will go to the OU game and our occasional "big" OOC opponent and watch the rest of our boring-*** schedule on TV (unless its on the Unicorn Network, of course).

dammit it's not chase mccoy. it's cade mccoy.

everyone of these teams can beat the Horns. To say they are boring nobodies right now is kind of ridiculous.

I was there Saturday night and I thought the stands were a little sparse, but it appeared to me they were mostly in student sections. The upper deck, west side and NEZ were quite full.

Maybe this was a good weekend for students to head home since we have a more interesting game next Saturday. And, all those student tix are bought android for. E students often draw even If if they aren't sure they will attend. They don't plan ahead that far.

Owlhorn -- The fact that most of those can beat the Horns says more about the current state of the program than it does about those teams (I say "most" because I disagree that "any one" of them can beat us; Rice, KU, ISU, etc should never beat us).

That doesn't change the fact that none of them are "household names" or the kind of national, historically strong programs that get people into the stadium and fired up at tailgates hours before gametime.

So while some of those teams can beat us, that doesn't translate into a full stadium or national coverage. That is what happens when you stick with a conference that loses flagship programs (one Top 5 all time) and replaces them with mid-majors.

If you were to come up with a list of the 20 most high profile programs -- winning % against BCS teams, Rose/Sugar/Orange/Cotton/Fiesta wins, national exposure, etc -- of the past 50 years, the Big 12 might have 2 of them. In rough order, that list would look something like this:

Notre Dame
Alabama
USC
Texas
Oklahoma
Nebraska
Michigan
Ohio State
LSU
Penn State
Florida State
Florida
Miami
Georgia
Washington
Ucla
Tennessee
ASU
aTm
Arkansas

I count 7 SEC teams, 4 Big 10 teams, 4 Pac 10 teams, and 2 ACC and Big 12 teams on that list. You could probably sub Clemson, Wisconsin, Auburn or maybe even BYU in for a few names on that list. But no other Big 12 teams comes close. Why? Because despite some recent success, the rest of the Big 12 schools were mostly terrible and/or played in 2nd rate conferences for most of the period between 1960 and 2000.

Hence low q-rating, which translates into low crowds.

Are Kansas State, Okie State, and Baylor better than, say, Michigan, Penn State and Tennessee this year? Maybe, maybe not. But if any of those last three teams played an OOC game against any random school out there, the home crown would be much bigger than it would against any of the first three.

Over time certain teams have been consistantly good more seasons than not. That is how they generate national recognition.

The Big 12 is worefully short of that right now, which is why Dodds should have pulled the plug. Its hard to get your alumni to pony up $10,000 to go to hype-free games in less-than-full stadiums against marginal schools that have been mostly bad over the past few decades (even if they have some modicuym of recent success).

I notice the student section is always the worst. Should they take some from that group so others can go? It seems like it's a waste of space when they don't show up. .

I agree with king, most sparse sections were the student section field level, and upper East Side where alum band was - where usually the other visitor seats are.

I was actually surprised at how full the rest of stadium looked. Anyone know attendance? Appeared maybe 20% empty at most which still translates to around 80,000. Even though it did my heart good to see such domination I understand others that would sit it out. Been a long time since we looked that strong.

As for Case - I thought for not playing previously and going in so late he looked remarkably confident and in control. I expected some tentativeness or something but saw nothing of the sort. Even saw him giving some instruction to Ash on sidelines after the bad sack. Took that to be a real positive that they have a good positive competition without any ugly envy going on.

I was somewhat surprised by the vacant seats. I flew in from Hawaii and then had to drive from DFW to get to the game. Stayed the whole time too! Even though KU is arguably the worst team at this level that I've probably ever seen, it was great to see a dominating defense and the running game have one of the best performances in years!

the godzillatron "how many showed up" quiz in the 4th Q said 99+K. there were lots of empty spaces at ko, but it filled up nicely before halftime....

I always get a kick out of the sudents who piss and moan abt the greyhairs getting choice seats and sitting on their hands during the game when it's always the student sections that come late, leave early.

Yeah, the students show up late, but a lot of times their "empty seats" around the fringes are the result of crowing 15 people into 10 seats in the lower rows. And, being in the middle of the NEZ, it's pretty obvious to me that the East side of the stadium is louder than the West side.

I understand that some games are more compelling than others, but I go to see TEXAS play. I don't really care who the opponent is. I guess that is just me.

In defense of the student section, I can vouch for the ~1.5 students per seat in the lower sections. I sit on row 8 and usually have to stand sideways during at least a portion of the game.

Idiots....it was Halloween weekend. MOST of the students were getting things set up for their Halloween parties are putting on the final touches to their insta-slut costumes.

I remember one year, we played nebraska at 11am, the day after Halloween. (Yet another idiotic decision), and there were PLENTY of open seats in the student section, (all still nursing their Halloween hang-overs). Hell, I'd have been doing the same had I not had to march out with the band.....

I was surprised there was as many fans in attendance as there were. It was pretty full considering two losses, the opponent, and as stated, Halloween. There wasn't much to watch after about midway into the third quarter, except the impressive performance by Bergeron, and a lot of people left prior to the Eyes, but I didn't leave early.
