credit card fraud question

Over the last two years, a close family member acquired five credit cards in my name, without me knowing, since they get the mail and pay the household bills. For a while they held the balance down to around two grand, then over the last few months ran the total to about fifteen thousand. I found out when my personal card company notified me that my credit was in the toilet, so credit rating is not a worry. I cancelled all the cards, so now I am getting twenty calls a day demanding payment. The purchases were disposables and gift items, so none can be returned. The card companies want me to contact their family fraud divisions, but I’m not sure what position that would put me in. Having this person charged with fraud is not an option, so I’m wondering what to do next. Any good advice would be appreciated, other than taking this person out for a bird hunt. And no jokes, please, I’m ready to shoot myself as it is.

Cabo, something tells me this is a bit more than a somewhat extended cousin...

I have no answer for you on this one but would like to offer my sympathies on this difficult situation.

From having previous credit card fraud, not family related, I do know that the credit card companies will hardly ever prosecute for credit card fraud. They will investigate any "fraud" and deem whether it was valid fraud and you get your money back or deemed legit charges on your end and you owe them or a collection agency their money. It is up to the individual to press charges and file a criminal police report, the credit card companies will not initiate that. They even went as far to tell me that if you ran up 5000 in legit charges but then came back to them and said it was all fraud, they would investigate it and find you liable for the charges but wouldn't bother filing criminal charges against you for "friendly fraud". Kinda strange but that's what I was told.

That sucks. I'd probably just pay it off and try to work something out where the relative would pay me back. I'd also make a point to emabarrass him at any and all gatherings of friends and family by asking publicly when he plans to pay back the money he stole from me.
