Creating a small website

Have to make a small website for a community group and can do the simple html coding and css and images.

This site won't generate much traffic. I can register the domain, does anyone know of a cheap or free web host that I can upload the .html pages too?

GoDaddy, Yahoo or 1and1 are your best bets.

All are very large hosting companies. The large hosting companies won't be likely to go out of business and will have pretty good uptime. The cheapest plan will be all you need.

I would go with Network Solutions. You can reate your website from one of their templates through their online site editor. It's simple and quick.

kev, how costly is it compared to others like it?

for the group: If a person has a website hosted by, say, Comapny A and they go out of business, do you lose that website totally? Are there backups that you can then take to another host? I know you keep the domain name if it is registered but what about the contents of the site?

Network Solutions isn't going anywhere. They are one of the biggest hosting companies. Their smallest hosting package comes out to 10 bucks a month if you sign up for a year. You get 1 free web address included. You can buy more than 1 year up front if you know the site isn't going to be a short term thing.

1and1 starts at $4/mo. I'd recommend them. I've used them for 5 or 6 years now.

If your hosting company goes out of business, they may or may not offer backups/access to files. Some just disappear. Always keep backups on your own.

Most of the hosting companies and resellers that are likely to go out of business probably already have. There was a major glut of resellers and now they are almost all gone. Without anything but anecdotal evidence and observation, I'd say that a comfortable guess is that over the last 5 years at least 9/10 hosting companies/resellers have gone out of business.

No matter what happens to the company that registers the domain name, you will be able to retrieve it, but it may be a headache.

I have a 1and1 hosting account. I can't stand their control panel. It's awful.

I have another account with asmallorange.com and am very satisfied with them. CPanel is the way to go.

thanks for the help. went with 1and1. Buddy at work uses it and can help, so the templates are out. As Gov. Spitzer says, will report back in short order.
