Cozumel tips and warnings

My wife's company gave her a 5-day trip for 2 to Cozumel. We've never been. Wondering if those of you that have had any must see, must avoid advice. We won't be doing any scuba diving.

Glad you're not going for the diving. I was there at Christmas, the diving and good snorlking's gone and it's never coming back. The last hurricane ****** it up something serious.

My favorite day was the one we went to the other (ocean) side and just hung out at a beach bar all day. Now that its the number one cruise resort on the planet the leeward side is crazy crowded.

I'm not a diver, but I'm curious, how can one hurrican ruin a certain spot forever? I've heard people say this before regarding different spots, but it seems to me that in a few years it would return to normal. I mean Cozumel has been there forever, tons of hurricanes have come and gone, and the diving has always been good. How does one storm ruin a spot for good?

Most storms churn **** up, kill the fish off for a while, whatever. That's not what happened with Wilma. This particular storm parked as a cat 5 over the island for like three days, and physically removed almost all of the shallow water coral reefs from the leeward side. What was reef and millions of fish, is now sand, smooth rock, and zero fish. It will come back I suppose, but it will take hundreds if not thousands of years.

Just went to Cozumel last month for my second time. You can still have fun going snorkeling or diving. I would recommend taking a snorkeling trip. The water is beautiful. The town gets crowded when cruise ships come in (there were three there at one time for a day). Swam with the dolphins at a park. That was a great experience. Still should have bought those shark skin boots. I never felt unsafe but would recommend staying in the populated areas.

that is definitiely the place!

makes you really feel like you've "gotten away from it all", sitting there, sipping XX, and eating great food. nowhere to go. nothing to do. it's like one of those f'ing Corona commercials.

yes, traveling to the other side of the island is a must.

on the main side, eat at Guidos Pizza and La Mission

The ruins are San Gervasio. Boring, mosquito ridden and the fee is ridiculous. Avoid at all costs. Take the ferry to Playa and go to Tulum or Chichen itza.

Pike - Playa Palancar is probably the best one on the city side, but we were talking about one on the ocean side that we have all been to. I think it's Chen Rios, but it might be Punta Chiqueros.

Chichen Itza is the real deal, but be aware it will eat up your entire day, as it is 2+ hours to get there and the site is pretty large.

Dont book excursion through your cruise line. grab a taxi. go to playa palancar. they have a dive shop. 20 bucks will get you 2 hours guided snorkel on palancar reef. The beach is secluded and never crowded. Dos equis at the beach are cheap and cold. Easy trip from the cruise dock.

Pike

I believe that bar on the bech is (or was) Mezcalitos. One of the best burgers on the island too. I would second Ernesto's - the shrimp fajitas are a religous experience.

Found out I'll be heading down to Cozumel early March for a destination wedding, so thought I would dig up this old thread. My girlfriend and I scuba dive, and plan to go 1-2 days while we're there. I only hope it's starting to recover, or that the dive boat would take us to a spot that wasn't affected as much.

Two questions:
1. Are there any particular dive companies that you would recommend in Cozumel?
We will only be bringing fins, mask/snorkel, so would need to rent most of the equipment.

2. Are there any things to do in Cozumel that you would recommend?
I would like to go to the Mayan ruins (tolum or chichen itza), but I know neither are on the island itself so curious if there are any outdoorsy activities beside diving, laying on the beach, etc. to do on Cozumel.

Thanks in advance, and as always

I used to always go with Divehouse: The Link No cattleboats, small groups, fast boats, good equipment, great divemasters. First class all the way.

But as said above (mostly by me), your expectations for diving should be pretty low. It ain't what is used to be.
