Cowgirl boots

My wife wants a pair of cowgirl boots, something she can wear with jeans or maybe dresses to football games and stuff. We're not really sure where to look, is Cavender's best or is there somewhere else we should go? (Austin area) How much should she expect to spend on a good pair of boots? I've seen them anywhere from $100-300. Any recommended brands?

Cavenders will be the best bet. They often have sales as well. I don't know a lot about women boots, but you can find a good pair for sure in that price range. It depends on what kind of leather you get. Lizard, gator, and full quill ostrich will be pricey, but you could find a great pair of cowhide for 150 i bet.

You should probably look at Justin. They are a good deal. I have Tony Lama and love them. Lucchese are probably the best also, but can get pricey.

I'm also a fan of Cavender's.

Right now, Ariat's "Fat Baby" line is popular with the ladies, but if you don't want a shoe that's going to look dated in 4 or 5 years (think feather hatbands from the early late 70's / 80's i.e. Smokey & The Bandit) then go with a good black Justin roper.

If she wants to look trendy, then fine... just avoid a super pointy toe as (again) those will go out of style in 5 years or so. The boots will actually last a LOT longer & the last thing you need is another pair of shoes in the closet that don't get worn.

Same goes for the flat toe... those came back in style last year & will probably last about 7 years before looking goofy.

A "pointy toe" is the style of the traditional cowboy and cowgirl boot. It has been in style since the 1800's. It ain't going to go out of style. "Fancy" non-cowboy boots have a rounded toe for both men and women. It is considered an office boot and not a working boot. (The "pointy" toes were so you could get your foot into the stirrups quicker and easier.)

Fat Baby boots are a fad.

Dogbert, I agree with the "back then" idea on it being the mid to late 1800's for pointy toes (back before then, shoes were usually not L & R, plus boots for riding were often flat toed) however the more common style today is a smoother rounded toe.

Go to any rodeo or roping event & you'll see about 90% round toes even though chunky round is popular @ the moment, even on the PRCA circuit.

I've never had any 'excessive difficulty' or issues with a plain rounded toe & my stirrups, although I've never really worn pointy toes since high school (early to mid 80's).

I'm over 50 and grew up in West Texas so I tend to like the old time traditional styles. I like pointed and medium mostly, but I have several pairs of rounded toe too. I like elephant and it is usually rounded toe.

IMO, Shepler's is way too overpriced in most areas. Plus, the house charges @ least $ 4.00 to do a hat cleaning whereas most other shops just live on tips for the person doing the shaping or cleaning; going rate is usually about $ 3.00.

those fatbaby boots are ******* hideous.

the girls around our tailgate usually rock the quasi-burnt orange classic style boots. niiiiice.

I think these people are giving you very poor advice here. Not because they do not know boots. Your wife probably thinks she wants cowgirl boots, and that is what people here have recommended. There is pretty much no boot made better than Luchese from a traditional boot standpoint. However, I know from experience that this is not what the wife wants. They want some fake designer boots that are stylish and not something that is a traditional cowgirl boot. You would probably need to go to the freaking mall or a place like Neiman Marcus to get what she wants IMO. I may be wrong, and I hope for your sake that is the case. I have been through this same situation and thought my wife wanted real boots. Make sure before you buy what she wants.

Thanks for the advice so far, but I have a feeling that Texas007 is partially right. Maybe I wasn't specific enough in my first post, my wife wants "cowgirl style" boots but she will never use them for any type of work or horse riding. Comfort and style are key, and something that will look good with a dress in the football season. Maybe we'll look at Cavenders and if that doesn't work, we'll hit up the mall.

Also, this is the first I've seen the Fat Baby boots, but they are hideous. People actually buy those?

Oh wow, those are terrible.

Wild-turkey- look into some Old Gringo boots. There are tons on the Allens Boots website (and in the store). They are pricier but the best looking boots around for women who want cowgirl style boots to wear around town.
There is another store in Austin that sells a lot of them but I can't think of it right now. I'll let you know if I remember.

i bought my gf a pair of these lucchese boots that she liked and i think they were around $225. i have a few pairs of lucchese boots i really like as well and would recommend the brand.

I think we were looking for suggestions similar to unpaintedhuffhines. I would expect there to be a lot of local shops in Austin that sell this type of thing, so it seems silly to go to the department stores in the mall.

i sent wild turkey a pm and then figured, why aren't i sharing this info.
my gf has a boot / apparel business with 2 other gals - all from UT (where they conceived of the idea). it's wurdtexas.com.
the stuff is pretty high-end (i believe it's all handmade in texas, using exotic skins).
if you're interested, let me know and she might be able t oextend a discount....

that picture on their webpage is of their backyard in austin - southside.

and one more thing...
since there was already mention of "fat" boots, no - the fat legs are not those of my girlfriend.
i keep asking her that they appear on the website to be marketing to a women's + store!
