Just tuned in and will be tuning out. At the end of the first half the clown announcer said that Kyler Murray was arguably the best player to ever come out of Texas high school football. He does not know much about the history of Texas high school football. Guy must have an OU connection,

Is this from last night or Friday night? Guy is too big a dumbass to tell him how stupid he is.

Kyler is a great athlete and was a tremendous HS QB, but there are plenty others that were that good or better and who could dominate:

Jackie Hathorne
Mickey McCarty
Billie Wright
Willie Ray Smith, Jr
Bill Bradley
Gene Mayes
Gordon LeBouef
Bobby Boyd
Larry Shields
Earl

These guys were dominant and except for Earl, I haven't gotten to the 70s yet.

(I really don't care enough to even look this up.)
Didn't Kyler Murray win every single HS football game he ever played, thus along with every playoff game and championship game, at the 6A level, while on the side playing baseball at a basically professional level?

I imagine his stats would be dazzling in both sports.

Saying he may be the greatest athlete to come out of Texas UIL may be WRONG, but it's not a stupid thing to say.

Okay, now I looked it up. In HS, 10k yards passing (117 TDs), 4k yards rushing (69TDs). National player of the year. 42-0, 3 straight championships. In college, set Big 12 passer rating record (199.2), won national player of the year and Heisman. Started one year: 42TDs/7int; 4300 yards passing, 1001 rushing, 12 TDs, Big XII championship and went to final four playoffs.

Drafted #1 overall to NFL; simultaneously, drafted #9 overall to MLB--the ONLY player ever drafted in both sports in first round.

At this point, I quit reading but there is probably more.

So, now, I have proven without a doubt that the announcer's statement--that Murray is "arguably" the greatest Texas HS player--is TRUE.

So, show me the list of other players who were undefeated three-time state champions, national HS player of the year, Heisman winners, oh, and if they have a second major sport then also mention that. I think we will have whittled down the list to where those on the list, if any, will also "arguably" be the greatest.

Sabre is right that saying Murray is the best football player to come out of Texas is stupid. He is one of the best quarterbacks to come out of Texas. One of many. I personally think guys like Earl did more to carry their team and guys like Nobis who played both ways were better FOOTBALL players. Both guys could play several positions. Football is a sport that requires a lot more than sheer athleticism. It comes from the gut. That much I do know.

Murray played in a very good program (complete with a $60 million stadium) that attracted great athletes to the program, one of which was Kyler. Quarterbacks do not have championships. TEAMS have championships and all the talk about quarterbacks as having championships is dumb. He was on a championship team and does not get all the credit. He excelled in the system but compared to other quarterbacks in the history of Texas high school football he is not in the top ten in any of the following;

-career passing yards

-single season passing yards

-single game passing yards

-career passing td’s

-single season passing td’s

-single game passing td’s

-career passing completions

-season passing completions

-single game passing completions

However, a player in the top ten in five of those categories is a guy named Garrett Gilbert.

As to awards that come from voters, many of whom don’t even see a player play their games, they are often a crapshoot. And the biggest crapshoot is the Heisman. OU sold hard for all their recent winners and even started the Heisman campaign for Rattler before he saw the field. Performance at the college level is not relevant to a discussion of the best of players in high school. Being a two-sport athlete is also a non-issue in a discussion of the best football player.

Sabre is a walking encyclopedia on Texas high school football and can give us a long list of candidates for the best players to come out of Texas, none of which can be called THE best. A discussion about the BEST player is also stupid.

Time to talk Longhorn football.

So, this was a weak response; thus, I suppose the effort at the end to change the subject.

For one thing, you changed the statement in dispute, which was that Kyler Murray was "arguably" the best Texas HS football product, to misquote me to say that he was the best ever, and then you called that "stupid."

Allen has won 5 championships, of which 3 in a row were with Murray as QB--also declared as national champions those three years. Lake Travis, where Gilbert went to school, is more of a system program than Allen, and has won championships with many other QBs than Gilbert. BTW--are you actually arguing that Gilbert is the best ever, so clearly that Kyler Murray cannot even be discussed?

Sabre may be an encyclopedia, but I'm sorry, if it truly passes muster on hornfans to mock Kyler Murray's undeniably fabulous accomplishments just because he chose not to come to UT, that's just Aggie all over.

I would like to see the HS graduation dates for all those players Sabre lists. Were any of them since the USSR broke up?

I'm a Vincent Young fan. For my money, that's who I would pay to see 100 times in a row and never tire of it. I've never pulled for Kyler Murray to win a single game he ever played in for any organization or any sport. Still, credit where credit is due.

I resent the accusation that any disagreement of the original post has anything to do with Kyler's choice of colleges. I personally have had two interactions with the Murray family in both cases to help them out. Neither will ever be discussed here because we were in the "dark gray" area in both cases. One was a request from a Texas coach, the other from Aggie alums. I never expected Kyler to come to Texas because of our coaches, until he was looking to leave A&M at which time I had hope because of the influence of his aunt & uncle. Our coaches blew that one.

Yes, Kyler won three in a row, but three watered down championships with the big schools divided into two divisions. Would they have won them all if they had been forced to play everyone? We don't know and never will. He was an extraordinary athlete leading a great team, but he wasn't alone. Did VY win one? No, because his team wasn't good enough, but he was extraordinary particularly against Northshore.

As for the dates of some of those I named, I purposely chose decades before to make the point that the original quote was from someone with a knowledge going back less than a decade.

For my money the best all around HS athletes were:

Jackie Hathorne
Mickey McCarty
Bill Bradley
Billy Wright

Did not call anything YOU said stupid. Did say giving championships to qb’s is dumb,
Did not say Gilbert was best. He is not. He just had better statistics, Did say there was not a best.
Did not discredit Kyler but did say he was one of the best quarterbacks to come out of Texas. His choices of colleges is irrelevant to me.
You meed to read the posts again and then let’s talk Longhorn football.

You guys are great posters and I appreciate you. However, I’m surprised you guys want to stand there and take machine gun fire in such an indefensible position. But, since you each seem upset, I’ll just let it go.

No Kenneth Hall?

Ken Hall was undoubtedly a great RB, maybe the greatest of all time, but he was not the all around athlete the others were. That's the same reason Bert Coan and Gordon LeBouef weren't on my short list

Joe Don looney??

He was a great RB, punter, and track star. Not many are aware that he came to Texas on a track scholarship and then transferred to play football at OU.

He pledged Kappa Sig at Texas, and would hang out at their house on 19th, as well as eating at what was known at the "Sig Toddle House". Fact or fiction, the story was he was eating in their one night and two guys from another fraternity came in and started picking on a cripple guy with a date. Looney supposedly got up, walked over, picked one up and threw him through one of the front windows, grabbed the receiver of the payphone, fed it to the second guy before throwing him through the second window. Supposedly apologized to the young lady for his behavior, then sat down to finish his meal. That story is compliments of Johnny Owen, manager of Clyde Campbell's Men's Wear for some 20+ years.
