Could Obama run as an Independent?

There's a chance that Obama could win a majority of the contested delegates, but still not get the Democratic party's nomination due to Hillary's superdelegates and Florida/Michigan delegates.

In that scenario, having won the popular vote so to speak, would Obama and his supporters be disenfranchised enough for him to consider running as an independent?

Its hard to imagine that accomplishing anything other than handing the republicans an easy victory and killing Obama's chances at another run in 4 years.

IF Obama had won the major of the delegates....I think you would see the super delegates start to side more with Obama than Hillary...even if some favor Hillary right now

There is nothing to say some she prob has cant or wont switch....esp if Obama is on top and looks to be the guy. Some analysts have certainly speculated that could be the case

He's easily the more electible guy against McCain and those people will know it. They will especially get behind the winner in Obama if he was already up on the delegate count

and who says those Florida/Mich votes end up counting? just because Hillary says so?

I don't think he should run as an independent, nor would he get elected that way. However, if he even hints at that today, I expect a bunch of democratic mainstream voters would switch from Hillary to Obama, just to prevent that scenario. He shouldn't do it, but if some handlers leaked the idea it was under consideration, it could really impact the race.

In most states, if you run in a party's primary you are banned from running in the general election if you do not win that party's nomination. So Obama, we he to run as an independent, would not even appear on the ballot in most states.

In 1992, Polls showed that an equal amount of Perot supporters would have voted for Clinton or Bush if Perot hadn't been in the race.

HOWEVER (as I've stated many times in the past)

Perot helped Clinton win in 1992 by requiring Bush to stay ON TOPIC during the debates instead of simply slinging mud at Clinton. When GHW Bush had to actually talk about policies, he was exposed for being a worthless idiot on many of the issues that Americans were most concerned with.

Requiring Bush to actually talk intelligently on issues was what made him a "one termer". NOT Perot "stealing votes" from him.
