Is it 100% impossible for Griffey to play another 5 or 6 seasons - just hanging around to break Bond's record? Surely he could go back to the AL and knock out 30 homers a year as a DH . . . right?
Actually he started breaking down about a year after he was traded to Cincy, which was in 2000. He spent the next six years on and off the DL. You certainly can argue that anyone in this era is under a cloud of suspicion, but I'd say just looking at the number of times he was hurt and the fact that his numbers were mediocre at best after his time in Seattle, that he probably wasn't. All of the guys in his stratosphere that we know used - A Fraud, Bonds, Clemens - got better. Clearly not the case here.
you are of course assuming he wasn't using when he was in Seattle. If he was using roids the majority of his carreer the breakdown would hit him late in his carreer as opposed to those who waited till late in their carreers to use.
