I listened to it 3 times on the way to work this morning. That song will always get you fired up for the week!!!!

Reminds me of moving to Texas when i was 13. First week in 7th grade, being forced to do square dancing in gym class.

Thinking what the hell is this? Why the hell did my parents move here?

i've always loved the cotton eyed joe. i remember at ranger games they used to have some guys playing it on the fiddle for the 7th inning stretch back at old ranger stadium. back when outfield seats were like $3. what a deal that was.

I didn't get an opportunity to listen to Cotton Eyed Joe on my way home from work this evening and am somewhat disappointed. I've been unable for about 3 or 4 weeks to string together 3 different times in 1 day that I listened to Cotton Eyed Joe. I listened this morning (1), then I listened to it at lunch (2) - but I was distracted by the Sports Buffet on 1300 and was unable to pull off the trifecta.

Gives me something to work towards tomorrow.

My favorite 7th Inning stretch anthem.

"Deep in the Heart of Texas" at Round Rock games is good, too.

I've got the cd of Bob Wills' 40s (late 30s?) version of Cotton-Eyed Joe. I'm pretty sure he wasn't the first to record it, but I don't know who else beat him to it.

I'm not aware of a late 30's version of Bob Wills doing Cotton Eyed Joe. there is some early stuff of him playing some fiddle breakdowns, like Smith's Reel. actually one of my faves. imo, Bob Wills is very underrated as a fiddle player. not the fanciest playing, but very natural and soulful.

I know they recorded a "different" version of Cotton Eyed Joe w/Tommy Duncan singing some lyrics that I've never heard anywhere else sometime in the 40's. in the post-war era they had less horns and more strings and were playing a lot of fiddle tunes (liberty, beaumont rag, etc.).

I used to play in a little hillbilly stringband and we got CEJ on request one night at a wedding reception. we'd never played it before but we pulled it off. it was really fun to watch everyone dance to it. funny that it was probably our "best tune" of the night and we'd never even practiced it before.

Listened to this song when I got in to work this morning. Then I listened to Sally Goodin'.

Those songs really get a guy going in the morning.

Well, we need Nancy Griffith to do a Christmas collaboration version with Mannheim Steamroller...

Seriously though, I remember learning Cotton Eyed Joe in sixth grade en masse outdoors with a bunch of other fiddlers, violists, cellists etc.

And then a decade later or so BAM! Darcie Deaville smacked me up side the head with her voice and version. Must of spoke to my ancestral hick DNA or something. Whew.

I scanned through the 100+ versions over at iTunes, but Darcie's version reigns supreme by me.

OK, I see the song is traditional and goes way back, at least to the 1800's.
But if you consider yourself a Texan, you must dance to The Cotton-Eyed Joe at least once at the Broken Spoke.

if you want to be considered a real Texan, you'll dance the Cotton-Eyed Joe at the Spoke w/ a dip, a plastic spit cup in one hand, and a bottle of Lone Star in the other.

and men should do the same.
