Costa Rica

Manuel Antonio is nice...the park and the various beaches are awesome. Arenal/Fortuna is a fun trip as well. Both are rather touristy but no too bad.

We did Tamarindo and Arenal in August.

I LOVED Tamarindo.....surfed during the day, drank beer on the beach outside our cottage in the afternoons/evenings, walked to places for dinner. Very relaxing.

The wife loved Arenal and the hiking to waterfalls, zip-lining, etc.

All depends on what you are looking for. We rented a car as well and that was an adventure (a good one). Fly into Liberia.

Heard it was great - so looking into some places.

Any good hotel/resort names?

I have never been down there - so trying to piece everything together?

Thanks again

Your wife will love the Blue Marlin..

just kidding, they are ***** bars..

There is a nice 4 Seasons there now.

Costa Verde in Manuel Antonio
Diria in Tamarindo
Marriott in San Jose
Volcano Lodge in Arenal
Lapa Rios in the Osa

Toyata rent a car has the best cars to rent typically.

I have stayed at the Marriott San Jose several times. I hear the Marriott Los Suenos on the Pacific side is good, but I have never been.

When I go, I usually either stay with family or off the beaten path in Limon/Talamanca. Not too much really fancy stuff down on the Caribbean side.

We stayed at a place, Los Altos de Eros, for a couple of nights while in Tamarindo. One of the most incredible hotel/spas I have ever been to and because it so small (5 rooms total), the attention you get is incredible. I would HIGHLY recommend it.

I've been to Tamarino a couple of times (gotta love the tamarind margaritas at Sunrise Cafe), and as recommended above, the Diria is nice if it fits the profile of what you're looking for.

There are also plenty of good day trips you can do from there... and they now do day trips trips from there into Nicaragua as well.

Tex Pete, probably 20 minutes from the beach. Distance is MAYBE two miles but given the road conditions its slow going. They have a shuttle that will take you anywhere you want to go and pick you up whenever- a BIG plus. You also have your own "personal attendant" that is assigned to you your entire stay......you literally do not lift a finger. There was only one other couple there during our stay so it feels almost like you have the place all to your own.

Open bar, sushi and shrimp for lunch, fresh fruit available all day.....all included in the cost of the room. I put back my share of Imperial and the wife enjoyed her wine.

My wife and I have talked about how much fun it would be to get a bunch of friends and rent the entire place out for a week or so- the ladies could do the spa stuff while the fellas went fishing or surfing. Maybe one of these days....

They used Morgans Rock resort in the latest SI Swimsuit edition when in Nica. This is the resort owned by Lapa Rios and just 20miles north of the CR border. Really nice hotel we stayed at 3 years ago..

If you want an un-touristy/Margaritaville type destination, check out Nosara on the Pacific Coast. I thought Tamarindo was a tourist trap. We stayed here, and can't say enough about it: The Nosara Beachhouse It's separated from the highway by a 20 mile dirt road (perfectly safe, just slow) that seems to keep most folks away.

Nosara looks like a great place, can you tell me how you get there? How far is it from Liberia Airport and will they pick you up at the airport or is it better to rent a car?

You can fly right into Nosara from San Jose via Sansa- flysansa.com

There are two areas for Nosara. The main town is about 5minutes from the beach and the resorts are all closer to the beach.
Corky Carroll has a really cool surf camp down in Nosara worth checking out.
Corky is a Malibu legend.
There is also some Brazilian supermodel who just opened up a bar down in Nosara and she can be seen around town often- hard to miss. Sorry, not Gisele.
