Converting VHS tapes to DVD

Has anyone ever tried this? I've got a DVD burner and I have a digital video camera with the 1394 firewire, but my older tapes on VHS I'd like to burn to DVD and cannot for the life of me figure out how to make the conversion.

Perhaps there is a way to copy the VHS tapes to the digital video camera first, and then I can burn it to DVD? Suggestions anyone?

The way I can do it (haven't burned the disk yet, but have downloaded the material to the cpu) is to put the tape in the VCR and then plug my camcorder (Sony Handycam PC109), matching the plugs, into the VCR.

I press record on the camcorder (at the appropriate settings) and then play on the VCR. Once I record what I want, I plug the camcorder into the cpu's USB port and then adjust the settings and then use Windows Movie Maker to capture the digital video.

I am not sure what you have exactly, when you say digital video camera. If you mean camcorder by that, they you are ok, but if it's a camera, you are SOL. I don't know of any cameras that convert analog to digital.

CNET has an article on how to convert analog to digital.

no, it's a digital video camera (Sony TRS something or another), but I tried plugging the camera audio/video cords to my VCR and doing record while the video was playing, but nothing happened. Maybe I'm just hooking up the cords wrong. I'll check out the link you provided. Thanks.

Go to Wal Mart and drop about $300 for a VHS to DVD dubbing. Its easy to use. I have one and it works great.

I would like to convert my VHS tapes too. When recording to your camcorder, make sure that you are recording from the same LINE input. I have recorded tapes to watch on a cruise trip.
