converting LP grill to charcoal

So my future father in law donated his 2 decade old LP grill to me to use at our new house. After looking at it and realizing that the regulator would need to be replaced and a lot of cleaning needed to be done, I decided to just buy my own LP grill for $150ish.

My question is, can I convert his old LP grill into charcoal by just removing the LP guts (the pipes) and putting a metal grate at the bottom of the firebox to put the charcoals on top of? Or is there something I'm missing?

That should just about do it. Make sure that there aren't any big holes in the bottom. You don't want hot coals falling out.

You might want to make whatever holes are left from removing the LP burner into adjustable vents. If it is a hole in the bottom you could just screw in a metal plate with a single screw so that you can move it to adjust the air flow that feeds the fire.

This is pretty much what I did. I removed the burner and then covered the bottom of the grill with a metal plate to prevent coals from falling out. Then I drilled holes in the side to allow air flow. You definitely don't want coals falling out cause if you step on one barefoot, or if your dog licks one, then it hurts like a mfer.
