Controversial opinions

Don't you know that Kroger hates their decision to violate the handshake agreement they made with Howard back in the 30s.
What was this agreement? I'm taking a blind guess, but I suspect it had to do with a gentlemen's agreement to stay within given regions of the state.

You don't compete with me here, and I won't compete with you over there...

A lot of companies made deals during the Great Depression to stay alive. It was an alternative to the government bailouts that are prevalent today.

SN,

We have a WINNER!

Austin, San Antonio, Corpus, RGV

A lot of Charlie staying out of Houston for so long came from his friendship with Robert and his family. Kroger invaded Austin, and when Robert sold out to Safeway, Charlie and the boys went into Harris County like Hitler "went into" Poland.

The nature and character of the people are what make a nation great--much more so than geography and natural resources.

Proximity to petrochemical plants substantially increases your risk for cancer. Judges have been protecting the industry for generations.

Yes, yes, yes, I'm well aware "it's the smell of money..." (says some blow-hard teacher who never opened or shut a valve other than a water faucet in her life)

Refinery row(s) = a double-edged sword.

Mixed feelings. It's got to be somewhere. Wouldn't want to live next door to it...

You can't find a bigger supporter of the E&P side of the business than me, but I've soured a lot on the refining end. At least anywhere within 10-12 miles of me. :beertoast:

Chop,

PNG was located two blocks from the world's largest chemical complex (not to mention refineries for Texaco (3), Gulf, Atlantic Richfield, Pure Oil, Mobil all with 5-6 miles). School has no AC, so windows always open. Studt showed class of 62 was about 150; class of 63 about 225; class of 64 about 325; classes 65 and up over 550. Classes of 65 & 66 had huge cancer losses within 10-15 years.

My dad worked in the middle of that for 48 years while smoking three packs a day and never got cancer.

My number 1 ranked store is an HEB store. They do really well.

(reading comprehension...)

You listed HEB as #7....(ranking comprehension). The COMPANY was rated #1 not just Central Market. Tom Thumb, Sprouts, Trader Joes, Randalls, etc are not better than HEB....period.

Before Robert sold Randall's & Tom Thumb to Safeway, he would give Charlie a run for his money, but they were friends, even using the same bank.

Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame.

The last few Commissioners should grovel before Pete's grave, flagellate themselves, and apologize for Pete's years of unwarranted exclusion from the Hall.

Nothing controversial about that. Unless there are details that the public hasn't seen, he was railroaded and should be in.

If you want a tough dog for a mascot, be the Dobermans, or the Rottweilers, for a change.

Texas ocean scientists should discover and implement a way to reverse the currents that take the muddy Mississippi and Atchafalaya drainages West to Galveston and Texas beaches in general. Then our beaches would be clear blue water and white sand. The Redneck Riviera in Florida could have muddy brown beaches.

Suggest you exam the NASA photos of the Gulf. The fact that the Mississippi makes a giant swirl to the West is the reason beaches from Biloxi to Port Lavaca and are mud banks & Alabama to Key West are clean.

Do you fly much? If you do, you know that there are two places you will ALWAYS bounce - Continental Divide & The Mississippi.

If you mess with the Mississippi & the magnetic pull, you may destroy the planet, and/or set off the New Madrid Fault Line.

I've got it. If we reverse the rotation of the Earth itself, then the Mississippi currents would flow over to the east side of the Gulf of America instead of westward.

Rank the US States:

1) Louisiana - Great food; great people; great parties

2) Oklahoma - Grand Lake; OU , the team I love to beat in anything

3) Arkansas - XNA is beautiful & powerful; Beaver Lake; Lake of the Ozarks; Hamilton; not the Fayettenam we grew up with

4) New Mexico - why does it exist? Taos is beautiful; ABQ has more brainiacs than any other city; food sucks; spare me the Santa Fe artsy, fartsy crowd, it's Aspen with less money

I enjoy many classic rock tunes, but it's time to put someone from Generation X or younger in charge of the between-innings music at Disch Falk Field.
