contenders?

No! No! No!

The Rangers are not contending this year. The objectives for this year are -

(1) Play the youngsters and let them learn on the job.
(2) Continue to develop the farm system.
(3) Avoid the temptation to trade for a "quick fix" at the trading deadline.
(4) Finish somewhere near .500.
(5) Finish in third place (or maybe second) in the AL West.

This is not the time to trade top prospects for rent-a-player pitchers in hopes of making the playoffs this year. Better to stay the course and look at the big long-term picture.

I'm with Dad on this. The Rangers are running four or five rookies out there every night. It's fun to watch them play and develop, but we shouldn't think they'll hold up through September.

I agree that this is a year or so too soon to be thinking "contender." I do think we can envision the Rangers as a spoiler of some sort.

The Rangers are in a position, if things continue to progress well with the young players, where they can contend in maybe 2009, more likely 2010.

However, they sure are fun to watch. Last night's comeback against the Angels, although it fell short, was a treat!
