While I am happy this *** monkey is the center of controversy and scrutiny (he can't get enough of it) I am bummed for the sport. It again puts focus on Lance whether he did it or not. Makes you wonder even more and I hate that because to date he has not tested positive and there would be such huge money for anybody to come forward and prove he did. Way more than anybody could come up with to keep many people silent by covering up.
This is a huge blow to a sport that has taken tons of punches already. I don't know what to think or believe now. Just allow them to do what they want?
From the report, it does seem like a minuscule amount - barley in the detectable range. And the food contamination excuse has been accepted in the world athletic arbitration court in the past...
Or it could mean he was doped so much to the gills that his masking technology only got 99.99% of the steroid.
There is another issue here, and that is if Contador's explanation is true, that there is enough hormones in the meat we eat to show up on an athlete's doping test. This is not good, and maybe we shouldn't be eating products with that stuff in it.
I've always suspected him of cheating, but it was probably primarily due to being a fan of Lance and thinking Contador was kind of a jerk with a big ego. It seemed like every time Contador looked beatable, he would miraculously revive for the next few races. When you don't like someone, it is easy to find things to color your opinion, Puerto, etc.
Contador tested positive to clenbuterol on July 21, the second rest day at the Tour de France. The day after, Contador set up overall victory by finishing in the same time as Schleck at the summit of the Col du Tourmalet. The amount of Clenbuterol detected in Contador was 400 times less than what WADA must be able to detect.
Clebuterol has some anabolic effects but that wouldn't be how it would be used in racing IMO. It is a beta 2 agonist in the short-term, stimulating the heart rate and acting as a bronchodialator similar to ephedrine or like a long acting albuterol. It would also be pretty useful as a training drug in that it will help make the person more lean - better muscle to fat ratio.
Microdosing doesn't make much sense but maybe it can be masked. Also perhaps, he could have simply reinfused blood from a time when he was using clenbuterol (if blood was stored, most clenbuterol would have degraded over time). Anyway, the USDA doesn't allow it and the FDA hasn't approved it, but it is allowed in some other countries as an asthma med and as a steroid for cows and other livestock.
What is Clenbuterol and what does it do?
Clenbuterol (often referred to simply as 'Clen') is not a steroid, but a Beta 2 Sympathomitetic and central nervous system (CNS) stimulant. It is a specific agonist, stimulating the adrenergic beta 2 receptors. It is used in certain countries in a medical sense as a bronchodilator in the treatment of asthma, though not in the UK and USA, mainly due to its long half life.
Athletes and bodybuilders use the drug due to its thermogenic and anti-catabolic effects. This is down to its ability to slightly increase the body's core temperature, thereby raising calorie (energy) expenditure. It is thought that a 1°F increase yields around a 5% increase in maintenance calories burned. Studies on livestock suggest that clenbuterol also has anabolic properties. However, this seems not to be the case in humans, thought to be due to the fact that humans lack the abundance of beta 3 receptors which increase insulin production and sensitivity.
Clenbuterol is dosed in micrograms (mcg/µg), most commonly in tablet form, though there are other forms of administration such as liquids, nasal sprays and injectables. Note: Although dosages are in microgram amounts, many manufacturers will list the active ingredient as milligrams (mg), so a tablet of 20mcg will be labelled as 0.02mg.
Supposedly, people who take it get pretty significant shakes. It is known to cause significant cramping which of course would be bad for cycling. However, the cramping effects can be limited by keeping well hydrated, taking potassium and possibly taurine supplements. When taking Clen, people must cycle (2 weeks on 2 weeks off) or the body will quickly build up a tolerance to it. Ketotifen is used to limit the tolerance. It also is used to accentuate the effects of Clen so less Clen needs to be taken to get the same effect. Clen is sold in Spain for use as a bronchodilator as Ventolase.
I don't know what to think of the tainted food excuse. Studies show that very little if any Clen would be found in the bloodstream. However, very little Clen was detected. So IMO it is possible but highly unlikely that eating a little beef would cause the positive result. The obvious answer would be to check the blood of other riders who had the beef. However, the other teammates of Contador could have been cheating in the same manner as Contador resulting in all of them testing positive. They could all claim it was the beef but in reality it could be that they were all cheating. Further, the other teammates may not have been tested at the same time as Contador so the data may be limited. As such, the testing of Contador's teammates has little utility in confirming or denying Contador's excuse.
Looks like Contador was also eating IV bags. Actually, based on the positive Clen test, I would guess that he is infusing his own blood and he was using Clen during the off-season to build a more lean body.
The budget is in the crapper right now, and the DoJ is burning millions investigating Lance for lying about using PEDs. Absolutely mind-boggling. Even if we were in the longest peace time stretch in American history, swimming in extra cash, and looking for ways to keep DoJ employees actively utilized (because Lord knows they aren't other things right now that they can be doing), it'd still be one of the biggest wastes of our money.
AG: We're saying Lance lied to Congress about doping. First we have to prove he did in fact dope. All right team, we need exhibit one...
AUSA: I got it right here. Other people said he doped.
AG: What? Don't they have tests for this sort of thing? You know...the tests the UCI uses to determine if someone should be suspended for doping? The tests that Landis, Contafor, Hamilton, etc. all failed?
AUSA: Those tests say he's clean.
AG: So we're investigating him for lying because others say he's lying?
AUSA: Yep.
AG: Even though the scientific evidence (which has caught other TdF winners) says he's telling the truth?
AUSA: I think he may have hooked up with one of the senator's daughters...
