Contador stripped of 2010 TDF title

Shocked!

Unfortunately it appears that the only way to clean-up this sport is to just stop it.

Yes, he cheated and got busted. Best way to get the sport cleaned up (keeping in mind nothing is perfect) is to impose ban after ban, along with stiff financial penalties and fines.

One would think you are right El Torito, but not in this sport. People are fined and banned on a regular basis and yet the practice goes on unabated.

How fitting that on a week that Lance's case is dropped Alberto Doucheador goes down...again. Tard.

Viper,
I'll concede that the doping problem will not go away overnight, as evidenced by the prevalence of positive tests. For me, the Festina scandal was the first time I realized how widespread and coordinated doping was in professional cycling, from the upper tiers of corporate management down to the cyclist himself.

Large sums of money coupled with the desire to push human stamina past the limit puts great pressure on cyclisists to do dope. The practice is old and deeply ingrained in the culture of the peleton. It will take aggressive prosecution coupled with strident public disapproval of doping and dopers for there to be a decent chance to clean the sport up.

Stiff penalties effectively killed the cycling careers of Tyler Hamilton and Floyd Landis. Others (Vinokourov, Rasmussen, Basso, Ullrich, etc.) had careers compromised. In fact, Contador should have been banned for at least two years from the date of guilt. Instead, he got "credit for time served" and is eligible to race in the Vuelta this fall.

When it becomes entirely predictable that a positive doping test will result in severe penalties such as minimum three year ban from all competitive racing and stiff financial penalties for the cyclists, teams, and corporate sponsors, then cycling will stand a chance of loosening the grip doping has had over it.
