Considering Move to Austin

We're currently in Houston, have one kid who's ten, another two. What neighborhood has the best combo of proximity to the city, economical rents / mortgages, and quality schools?

Highest quality schools in AISD are up in the northwest, in the Anderson High area. Not sure what the prices are like up there for homes (I rented, but found it affordable) but it's not too far from downtown, and is actually close to Cap Metro stops, which I highly recommend for the daily commute.

Outside of AISD, I'd recommend Eanes ISD obviously, although I'm not sure if you'd consider that "economical." Westwood HS in Round Rock ISD (just a few miles north of Anderson HS) is also nationally recognized. Round Rock HS was once a national something or other school, but Westwood is the better of the two academically. A word of caution: the further north you go, the more you have to deal with traffic nightmares, as there is a crapload of construction up there. Think of that mess they had for what seemed like a decade at 59 and 610, and you'll get the idea.

Try RIver Place/Steiner Ranch, at 2222/620. The commute is longer than the others mentioned, but prices are better. Nice areas (hills, lake or canyon views in many areas), good amenities. Schools are in Leander ISD, which is all over the board. However, there are 2 elem and a MS in STeiner, all exemplary rated. Another elem is being built in River PLace, and a fourth just down 620. DIstrict just bought land by the 3M offices for a HS and another MS.

We just bought in River Place for a little under $150/sqft. We think we got a good deal on the house relative to what we could get for our money in NW Hills.

We live in NW Hills and love it, we are within walking distance of Doss Elementary and Murchison MS. We bought three years ago, and got lucky getting a house from an estate so got a good deal. I haven't priced lately, so I'm not sure the current prices. Even in rush hour, I can get to my office downtown in maximum of 20 minutes, 10 minutes without traffic.

I'm not sure if I should be making a new post for this so in the interest of recycling i'll post here....

I'm moving to Austin for my first post-college job. I'm working in Northwest Austin and seeing as I'm moving from the northeast, and I don't know many people in the area, i'm looking to move into one of these community apartment complexes...

I'm 23 years old and want to meet as many people as quickly and easily as possible. I'm definitely open to living downtown and dealing with the traffic if that's the place to be. Otherwise anywhere between downtown and Northwest (near IBM) would be fine by me. I like being close to the action and i'm open to suggestions.

Any help would be appreciated.

I get living in NW HIlls for the location, but my God there is some ugly property for sale there. Think 1970's. You also get to pay about 400k for that crap and get AISD schools, although some of the better ones.

to the poster who replied to jguy, what traffic downtown? if you live anywhere from 183 to mopac, cesar chavez to 35 street, you'll never hit traffic AS BAD as if you live outside that square. EVER. ****, you should probably bike to everywhere you need to go but probably wont. traffic downtown is driving in lights for 10 minutes or so, you'll soon find the roads with less people and your commute will get faster.

most of the people downtown are trying to get to NW austin, RR, kyle, william cannon, etc. their objective is get to mopac or 35 quick. if you can avoid those obvious clusterfucks and take the streets, you'll be fine. of course this means working somewhere downtown ish but even then, i'd need more info but you'd probably be going against traffic flow most of the time by living downtown. i love living on downteast/east austin, i never hit traffic unless i'm driving right between 5pm and 630 pm, a few minutes before or after that and i avoid it completely.

oh and to the original poster, i'd say live wherever you like the neighborhood. the magnet schools take kids from all over aisd, i think they aren't bad but to each his own.

edit: saw the part where he is working in NW austin, my bad, please disregard my first paragraph. hmm... it could very well suck but maybe if you get to lamar, burnet or just leave a few minutes earlier/later you could beat the traffic. good luck!

I'm 27, and purchased a relatively cheap condo in the NWHills area... and love it!

I work up North, so I never hit traffic. I hit up downtown several evenings a week, but by 7pm, I don't hit any traffic going south. It is a win/win situation.

Highly recommended.

I have done a fair amount of work in various capacities on houses in Travis Country & even though the development was being built in the mid 70's, there is such a mixture of architecture & newer homes that it doesn't look dated.

Granted, I can easily pick out the houses that were built in 1975, but that's possibly because I'm in the business.

PS to JimmyJazz: Call, Email or PM me for off season pricing for those roof fans we talked about.
