Conservatives are right:
• Too much government can crowd out private sector innovation and stifle incentives
• Too much government can lead to confiscatory policies that are not necessarily rooted in “fairness” and in extreme cases can lead to tyranny
• Liberals place so much emphasis on victims and the oppressed, that they are at time incapable of recognizing problems that are not caused by external forces or responding appropriately to behaviors that harm greater society.
• A market economy is the best engine for building wealth at all levels of society
• Morality does matter, and it is not reasonable to pretend that people act against their interest merely because they vote based upon their moral values as opposed to direct economic advantages.
• People respond to economic incentives.
• Majorities will vote their own interests at the expense of others hard work and labor.
Liberals are right:
• Government is a necessary bulwark against the worst excesses of capitalism.
• The concentration of power in private sources is not necessarily any more benevolent than having government accrue power.
• Wealth is not accumulated in a vacuum. Successful people almost always benefit from the advantages of a strong society, and public institutions.
• The market is not a “cure all” for economic hardship and educational disadvantages.
• A vigorous defense of individual rights and traditionally oppressed groups is necessary to prevent majority interests (or entrenched powers) from behaving in ways that are cruel and tyrannical.
• People do not always respond appropriately to economic incentives, and regulations are necessary for the protection of all of society.
• The wealthy will use the political system to protect inherent advantages and perpetuate their position at the expense of others hard work and labor.
