The Temple College Leopards beat arch-rival McLennan Community College, 6-5, in 13 innings today to win the NJCAA Region 5 tournament, played in Fort Worth. The Leopards now advance to the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, CO.

Our coach, Craig McMurtry, played juco at MCC and even has had his number retired. I think he might have led MCC to a national title when he was there. He also had a major league career with Atlanta, Toronto, Houston and Texas. And now he's ours, and he's an outstanding coach. We are heading to the national tourney with only seven full scholarships. We play against teams that give as many as 22 or 25 fulls. Yet we obviously are very competitive.

Wish us luck in Colorado!!

Congrats to Temple College baseball. Brings back memories of my alma mater, Hill College, going to the NJCAA basketball tournament in '74. I made the trip to Hutchinson, Kansas to cheer on the team. I was treated to a foot of snow the last night there, driving behind a convoy of Amish buggies on I-35, and getting my picture on the front page of a couple of Kansas dailies. HC finished third, by the way.

Here's to the Leopards bringing home a title.

It still amazes me that Junior Colleges can offer full scholarships to virtually every baseball player (24 total) and in Div 1, we get all of 11.7 scholarships. I guess that does explain why there are so many JC transfers into Div 1 programs.

We still have to operate within the rules of Title IX, but our board of trustees will not approve additional scholarships for baseball or softball, even though the sports generate a lot of contact hours. We did a study a few years ago and found that for every athlete who comes to TC, 4.3 additional students come with him/her. These are students who would never have considered TC otherwise.

does this mean Temple College has now surpassed the other JC powers that I can sorta remember, San Jac. and Grayson County?

Centex, with all respect, no, it's not a shame that one had to lose. To the TC employee or fan, MCC is nothing but OU in Waco form.

MCC sucks!!

D1: full tuition/fees, books, room/board

D2: full tuition/fees, possibly books (I can't remember)

D3: nothing

I remember I used to have a gazillion of his baseball cards. Didn't know who he was other than that he was from Texas. If I didn't know 'em but saw they were from or played in Texas, I usually kept them. Congrats to him and his team.

A couple more things:

Craig gave up Barry Bonds' first home run. Bonds didn't do too badly in his career!

Also, last year, Howard College won the national title with a 57-1 record. Who gave them their only loss? That's right -- Temple. In the regional tournament, 8-2. Had 'em on the ropes in the championship game, too, as we were leading 4-2 in the 9th inning, but the wheels came off and we lost. Then Howard goes to Grand Junction and wins the whole thing. Oh well, at least WE have them the blemish!

kinda confused here. Help me out. So San Jac is stil the power in Texas Juco baseball?

If so, I'm guessing they're a different division than Temple.

So, in your opinion, which is the power for which division of Juco baseball in Texas?

Yes, San Jac is still a power, but they do not play in Temple's conference, which is the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference. Our region is Region 5, which pairs the NTJCAC with the West Texas JCAC. We play the western Texas and Eastern New Mexico schools in regionals.

Schools in our baseball conference are Temple, McLennan, Hill, Grayson, Weatherford, Cisco, Ranger and Vernon. This differs from basketball, in which we lose Cisco (dropped men's basketball a few years ago) and Vernon and pick up Collin County and Southwestern Christian College (located in Terrell).

Well, Alex, with only seven scholarships to give, a good number if our players get nothing, too. Several of our starters get little to nothing. So they are playing out of love of the game as well.

If Temple and Southern Nevada win their first games in Grand Junction, the Leopards will play against Bryce Harper, the catcher who got his GED after his sophomore year in high school so he could play juco ball and enter the draft this year. He should be a junior in high school, but he's a freshman in college.

Gloucester County won and will be in the final tomorrow night. Tyler has to win 2 tonight to make it to the final. I hope they do it as a rematch of Saturday would be greatness.

The Leopards left at 5 pm today for Grand Junction. If I didn't have to pay for football tickets, I'd go up there, too.
